Re: System Administration Position
Here's the main page for the HP Books web site:
http://www.hp.com/hpbooks/index.html
And here's the site for HP-UX books:
http://www.hp.com/hpbooks/subject.html#operating
They also have books on Networking and many other subjects as well:
http://www.hp.com/hpbooks/subject.html
Of course there is always training classes from HP on HP-UX. Some good starting points are probably Sys & Network Admin I & II and then you can branch out to other classes. These are probably best paid for by your employer though as they are pretty expensive.
Here's the HP Education web site for Unix courses:
http://education.hp.com/curr-unix.htm
Good Luck in your new position.

Re: System Administration Position
On the other hand, try to use HP resources. I have some experiences about Solaris and AIX, compare with the resources which we can get from web site, HP is the best. Here are some fyi:
1. ITRC Forums
post your question or do search, you will find you almost can get everything you want, at lease some hints from experts.
2. www.docs.hp.com
3. ITRC Knowledge Base and Knowledge Tree

Re: System Administration Position
Do you have a 'infrastructure'-group; a networkgroup; a storage group; a 1st line, a 2nd line supportdesk ?
How many people can call you with problems?
Does the management require to deliver performance-reports or not?
Technical info about sysadmin can be found as described by others..
Often you are also a contact person for 3rd parties, like your hardwaresuppliers.. but most answers to technical issues can be found in this forum..

Ceesjan

Almost all companies (I think) will be willing to send you to at least one HP-UX training since you've mentioned that you only got 1 yr of experience. Depending on which part of the country you're located, you should be able to find if not HP then authorized HP-UX training center for your needs. After the first training the fun begins and this is where you would want to spend at least 2-3 years as you work and learn from experience, after which you can acquire more training of advance topics like "LVM Hands-on", etc, etc.
http://education.hp.com/hp-uxadvancedadmin.htm
I find it more effective to learn it the hard way first, sweat it and make mistake (not too many) along the way and later when you attend advance training everything will fall into place and your understanding of the subject matter will come easy.

Re: System Administration Position
Do an install of HPUX.
Read the forum. Every day.
Do what the Brains in the forum tell others to do.
Read the man pages
Look at the scripts they post, and try to figure out what they are doing.
Good luck. This is the best job you'll ever hate.
