system backup

Hi alltogether,

I have my HP-UX 11 running now in an quite appropiate way. Before I went further with some modifications I want to backup the whole system sa it is existing now. I have a second temporarily unused harddisk in the maschine. If I do a cp * at / is this enough to backup everything in a bootable status. I mean if I will later choose the second hd as bootpath will the maschine boot from there or do I have to do anything different to back it up for such purposes?

Thanks in advance,

Oliver

Re: system backup

use

make_tape_recovery -AI

at a minimum

You can not use "cp" to make a disk bootable. To mirror a disk, use mirror/ux (which you have to purchase from HP). You can mess with "dd", but a make_tape_recovery is the best option.

Re: system backup

Hi,
It is not enough to copy the boot disk to a secondary disk. It is possible to create a boot disk manualy but rather complex. The best way to clone the boot disk is with Ignite (make_tape_recovery or make_net_recovery).

Re: system backup

cp -rp * will back everything up, but not be bootable.

ignite is made for that purpose.

An ignite backup of vg00, followed by an fbackup of the rest of the system would work, or a combination of fbackup, and a 3rd party backup like HP Openview's Omniback, now called dataprotecter.

Re: system backup

If you need your second disk to be a bootable backup, but you don't have or don't want to use MirrorDisk/UX functionality, then you can use 'dd'. dd can replicate the disk such that it will be bootable.

Re: system backup

Oliver,

if this is to be a production server I would recommend mirror-UX.

Anyway you will need to backup your system with Ignite.
Always have more than one copy (usually one - or more - copy offsite).
We also keep previous version (-1, -2).
This must be part of your backup procedure.

Re: system backup

Hi alltogether,

a lot of thanks to everybody. Your answers gave a good introduction into the different ways possible. I choose the dd option (with the right order of if and of / I hope, but I am still working on netscape so it looks fine).

I will later install Ignite and doe the backup and the installation of my diskless system with that. Where can I obtain it?

Thanks again and best regards,

Oliver
