system doesn't find the new disk

Hi,
I replaced a new disk in our workstation but the system doesn't find it (SEArch command). The disk is low level formatted and ID is OK.
The workstation is HP9000/C100, OS is 10.20, old disk was ST32430WD and new disk is ST32550WD. What could be wrong?

Re: system doesn't find the new disk

hi,

The problem which you are facing could be b'cos
1) Disk ID clash
2) SCSI Termination
OR
3) Disk incompatibility
4) Bad Disk

I think (1) & (3) you are sure & no probs.
pls check for (2) & If possible chek the disk
on the other server to donfirm the bad disk.

Re: system doesn't find the new disk

I have done this several times and I also tried with another new disk (ST32550WD).
There is also another disk (ST19171WD) in the same bus and when the new disk is conneceted the system doesn't find this another disk either. The IDs are not same. Neither of the disks have terminators but there is an external terminator.
I also tried without the second disk but no success.

Re: system doesn't find the new disk

Hi,
Could you check the Jusmper settings if any on the DISK.
Things to check :
Auto Termination, RPM selection, SCSI ID.

Hope that helps.

Re: system doesn't find the new disk

hey ari,
i think ur problem maybe coz ur new disk (ST32550WD) is NOT SUPPORTED by HP.
Since u say that there is also another disk (ST19171WD) in the same bus , and when the new disk is conneceted the system doesn't find this another disk either.
Try replacing ur new disk wih another model.
Thanks ,

Re: system doesn't find the new disk

Hi Ari,

Pls find the below the diff . in 2 models.
it seems that the hard disk is not getting detected due to mismatch in SCSI interface type and Data transfer rates.
One disk is Fast wide SCSI-2 and other is Ultra wide SCSI-3. i think this is causing the problem.

SEAGATE PART# ST32550WD
INTERFACE Fast Wide SCSI-2 (68 pin) HV Differential
CAPACITY 2.14 GB
AVERAGE SEEK 8.0/9.0ms
DATA TRANSFER RATE 20 MB/sec (sync)
ROTATIONAL SPEED 7200 RPM
BUFFER 512KB

SEAGATE PART# ST19171WD
INTERFACE Ultra Wide SCSI-3 (68 pin) HV Differential
CAPACITY 9.1 GB
AVERAGE SEEK 8.5ms
DATA TRANSFER RATE 40 MB/sec (sync)
ROTATIONAL SPEED 7200 RPM
BUFFER 512KB

try using both the disk with same Interface type.

hope this will solve ur problem

Bye
