System panic...

Last night for a yet unknown reason, one of our HP-UX 11i v1 servers paniced with the folloiwng message:
Reboot after panic: mp_b_sema_sleep:blocking on a semaphore we already own.

Any ideas what could have caused this (before I call HP support)?
Thanks,
Steve

Re: System panic...

check /etc/shutdownlog and /var/adm/crash directory for any core dumps taken. Also check end of the file for any errors in /var/adm/syslog/OLDsyslog.log

Re: System panic...

Have a look at PHKL_34105. It's always a good idea to search the patch database.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: System panic...

Hi Steve,

I took a quick look at the customer problem database and found what could be a hit. I cannot say for sure without the full stack trace of the panic, but there is a known problem with VxFS 3.5 filesystems on HP-UX 11.11 that results in a panic with the message you indicated.

The fix is in PHKL_30690, which has since been replaced by PHKL_34122. I recommend installing PHKL_34122, and any dependent patches, to see if this resolves your problem.

If you could cut/paste the entire panic stack trace it would help me determine if you are seeing the same panic as the one I found in the database.

Regards,

Dave

Re: System panic...

Gents,

I would be glad to supply the full panic stack trace if I knew how. I am the junior guy and the rest are out of the office.

Time to call HP support?

Re: System panic...

Shalom Steve,

I think you are better off checking system patches.

Just in case this is a real crash:

vi /etc/rc.config.d/savecrash

Make sure its set to 1.

/var/adm/crash

May contain a crash dump that can be analyzed and sent to HP.

Normally patching fixes problems like what you posted.

Re: System panic...

Hi Steve,

HP provides a tool called "crashinfo" that you can run against a system panic dump. This tool is used to collect a "first pass" look at a system dump. If your system did save a crash dump following the panic, you can get a copy of crashinfo and run it against the saved dump.

If you do not have a copy of crashinfo let me know and I can provide the latest copy along with a usage string to collect the tombstone of the dump, including the stack trace of the thread that caused the panic.

Regards,

Dave

Re: System panic...

Thanks to all. I do have the crash files and just placed a call with HP support to have them take a look at the situation.
