Tachyon 5158A

I have been given a lot of (very) used computers to try to make a lab out of. One of these is an A400 that was loaded with HP-UX 11.0.
This guy had its 5158A Tachyon card and the GSP cards in the wrong slots. I reversed them (ITRC Forums are to be thanked for this info) but noted that the driver for the 5158A was not mentioned by swlist. I loaded it (version 11.00.10). During boot, I note that the card is configured. But ioscan doesn't show it (ioscan -fn) and neither does it show on xstm.
Its a good chance that the card is a piece of junk. I've already swapped it with another card, which had the same symptoms. Its possible that they're BOTH junk, but I've run out of options at this point. I don't have any more cards to try, and none of these machines have any form of HP support.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Re: Tachyon 5158A

Please put this patch PHKL_28004:
s700_800 11.00 Fibre Channel Mass Storage Driver Patch

Patch first then re-apply the driver.

Re: Tachyon 5158A

Hi Chris,

Even w/o the driver loaded ioscan should still show the card. Without another system to try the card in to rule out the slot or a system problem, there's not much more you can do.
Do you have any other HP PCI card you can try in that A400 slot? Do you have another 9000 system to try the card in?

Re: Tachyon 5158A

Chris,

Do you have the driver fc in your system file?.

In the 'ioscan' atleast you should be getting some UNKNOWN device in UNAVAILABLE state with the description containing the card's type. Then I will think of the driver issue.

If not, then I don't think you can do anything. You probably might have tried it in another slot already?. I don't know how an A400 looks like.

Re: Tachyon 5158A

Hi Chris,

If i am correct a A400 has 3 PCI slots. 2 Turbo as they were called and one regular. I assue you put the tachyon card in one of the turbo slots. You could give it a try in the other slot.

Re: Tachyon 5158A

Thanks folks--the state of the equipment here is deplorable. The old saying that applies here is "We the unwilling, being led by the unqualified, have been directed by the uncaring to achieve the impossible using absolutely nothing".
The A400 only has two slots. There's another A400 here, but I don't know if it works or if its in any better shape. Its the one I swiped the 5158A card from. I'm gonna apply the PHKL_28004 (plus a gazillion dependencies) and see what happens.
If that doesn't fix it, then I'll have to use a Sun 420r as master to this EMC array.

Re: Tachyon 5158A

During boot, I got the following messages:
Configure HP Fibre Channel Mass Storage interfaces .................. OK
Configure HP Fibre Channel Tachyon TL/TS Mass Storage interfaces .... OK

This tells me that the driver loaded. But again ioscan -fn doesn't show anything. Remapping xstm didn't change anything either.
I think this thing is completely hosed, and now I gotta go to Sunsolve. I've never connected a Sun to a SAN (a little alliteration is good for the soul) but I guess I will now.....

Re: Tachyon 5158A

Chris,

odd thing, however since this is 11.0 and although I thought you would not need it for the A5158A, just to give it a shot you could check
sam - kernel config - subsystems - FC Mass Storage Subsys
shows included. else include and see if anything changes.

Re: Tachyon 5158A

Yeah Bernard--SAM shows the FCP Fiber Channel Mass Storage Systems as included. This beats the heck out of me. I'm gonna see if I can get a 5158A cheap off of Ebay.
