Tape devices with LUNs greater than 7

We have a fiber to scsi router with 9 devices attached to it.

We have found the HP knowledge base entry KBRC00010719, which describes the hard coded OS limit of 7 as the maximum lun number used for scsi. It describes a system that is used for disk devices that automatically increments the target number when the lun id reaches 8, 16, 24, etc...

Why wasn't this same technique applied to tape devices?

Why have such a small limitation on LUNs in the first place, considering that most other *NIXs support 256 luns (yes I know that Linux used to require a configuration change to enable 128-255).

How do I get around this limitation?

Why ask why? It is what it is --- and it's documented. You might put in a request for a change.

If it ain't broke, I can fix that.
