Re: tape drive driver is unknown

What system model and drive is it?

Because of the age, the HBA is either single ended (very, very slow) or HVD SCSI.

Maybe the driver is just not aware of this type of drive (family) - there is probably nothing you can do...

Hope this helps!

Re: tape drive driver is unknown

IMHO this is a DDS-3 drive connected to the built-in single ended SCSI connector.

You can check if the tape driver is already included into the kernel (via SAM) - look for tape2 and stape driver.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: tape drive driver is unknown

Hi

I agree. You're missing a driver that you can load in with SAM. But it should be stape and stape should be built automatically at boot up.

Here is the Sony procedure

Setup for stape device driver is not required. At the time of booting, stape device driver performs negotiation
and its setup automatically.
Note: Configuraiton using sam
1) Log on as root.
2) Run SAM: $ /usr/bin/sam
3) Choose Peripheral Devices and activate [Open].
4) Choose Tape Drives and activate [Open]
5) From the "Actions" menu in the "Tape Device Manager" window, choose Add...
6) Within the "Add a Tape Drive" window, read the instructions, then active [OK].
7) SAM may detect that your HP-UX kernel lacks the drivers necessary to make use of the tape drive. If so,
within the "Device Driver Check" window, read the messages and choose the appropriate action. If you
choose, Build a new kernel and shutdown the system immediately, SAM will create the kernel you need and
reboot your computer. The rebooted system will be able to use the tape drive.
8) If you had to shutdown your system in order to physically connect the tape drive, re-enter SAM and repeat
step 3 through 6 above.
9) Choose the new tape drive.
10) From the "Actions" menu, choose Create Device Files.
11) Activate [OK] and exist SAM.

Re: tape drive driver is unknown

The taoe drive is connected to the built-in single ended SCSI bus, but I'm not exactly sure if a tape will be claimed by "stape" or "tape2" driver there. Just make sure to include both. But maybe a DDS-3 will not be claimed by the tape2 driver, because it is too new for this driver.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: tape drive driver is unknown

Hi,

Although not sure which module you need for such tape,"stape" or "tape2" or "tape1".most probably it would be "stape";any way here is a way to check that those are added to the kernel:
sam-->kernel configuration-->drivers--->
then highlight the mentioned drivers--->action-->add;

then turn off the system...connect the tape and start the system,

hope it works

Re: tape drive driver is unknown

Wow, wow, wow cowboy. It's not automatically being built on reboot so there's something else going on.

"...Setup for stape device driver is not required. At the time of booting, stape device driver performs negotiation

...like maybe the firmware or a defective device.

Re: tape drive driver is unknown

This is probably an incompatibility issue between your server and Tape driver that is a Sony DDS-3 supported HW, either you do not have a correct driver or it needs dip switch settings and a firmware update ?

This docs for you if you still do not have it:
