Tape to disk to tape copy
Does anyone know how to do a tape to disk to tape ?
I've got a DDS3 tape which holds a dump of a file system i'd like to . The server i'm restoring to , has a DDS2 tape drive . So i've got to transfer the contents of the tape to a DDS2 tape .
Tried dd , copying to disk then to tape . But when i use "restore -i" it doesn't work .
any ideas as to what i could do ?

Re: Tape to disk to tape copy
How to get the information off the tape depends on how it was written.
If cpio wrote it, cpio has to restore it.
If fbackup wrote it, that toolset restores it.
Same with tar.
Once you know how the tape was made, how you get it on the DDS2 tape is up to you.
tar
cpio
fbackup
The right tool for the write job.

Re: Tape to disk to tape copy
You will have to restore on disk and then back it up on dd2 drive. No short cut methods here.

Re: Tape to disk to tape copy
You can use "dd", but you need to know how the tape was created.
dd if=/tapedrive of=/diskfile
You might need to set block sizes.
man dd
I've done DLT to dds and back again without any data loss!!!
