Tar: end of tape

Hi .. when i finished to make_tape_recovery i had next message on my system:

Tar: end of tape
Tar: to continue, enter device/file name when ready or null string to quit.

some times when i put the tape the work is finished .. why? what is the meaning of this?

Hi Manuales:

If your Ignite image requires more than one tape, you probabaly have (1) too much data in vg00; (2) are trying to backup more than the standard vg00 contents; and/or (3) are using "shorter" tapes than you could, perhaps retricted by the type of tape drive.

Regardless, in addition to the data written to a tape, there are end-of-data marks written. In the case where the second tape is required, but the Ignite process terminates shortly after mounting the tape, I'd say that you were just unluckly and needed another few inches or so of tape!

Hi,

you should check if you can free some space at your disk before you create the tape.
For example in /tmp or in /var/adm/crash.
You also can exclude directories from the archive, see 'man make_tape_recovery' -
option -x exclude=.

Hi,

This message means that the data being backup up is more than the capacity of tape media. There may be many reasons for this

1. vg00 was not mentioned while taking backup and system is backing up more than vg00 causing this.

2. Tape media was not rewinded prior to backup causing not full capacity of the media being utilized.

3. Media/Drive is faulty.
