Re: tar "file" > 2GB. Not dumped
I believe there is a later tar patch which enabled file sizes up to 8gb. At 11.11, make sure you have tar patch PHCO_26423 or later. Outside of that, gnu tar allows for larger files as well.

Re: tar "file" > 2GB. Not dumped
http://hpux.cs.utah.edu/hppd/hpux/Gnu/tar-1.15/
Also, be sure that "largefiles" option is enabled on your filesyste:
fsadm -o largefiles /path/to/filesystem

Re: tar "file" > 2GB. Not dumped
judging from your error message, I guess your system is 11.11.
If that is correct, you should install patch PHCO_28414.

Re: tar "file" > 2GB. Not dumped
Do you have the latest tar patch on your system.
HP-UX 11.11: PHCO_28992.
Create a new mountpoint for example: /backup
If you're dumping to a directory for example:
/backup
And let /backup support largefiles:
fsadm -F vxfs -o largefiles /backup
Than do the following:
tar -cvf /backup/test.tar /u01/oradata/openrpt
Does the error -message still occur?
GoodLuck

Re: tar "file" > 2GB. Not dumped
If the file is larger than 8Gb, classic Unix tools cannot be used. You'll need to use fbackup or a commercial backup utility. As with the 8Gb tar patch, both systems must be running compatible backup/restore programs. All versions of fbackup starting with HP-UX 10.20 can handle large files.

Re: tar "file" > 2GB. Not dumped
whence -v tar
what $(whence tar)
The first command will show you the location of the tar command when you use it without a full pathname. The second reports the 'what string' found inside the program. You should see "PATCH_11.11 (PHCO_28992)" as part of the tar.c what string. If not, you're not running the patched version of tar. Normally, tar is found in /usr/bin, but if you don't refer to tar as /usr/bin/tar, you will get whatever program is found in your current $PATH.

Re: tar "file" > 2GB. Not dumped
thank you for your notes
the following is the output of your suggested commands:
# whence -v tar
tar is /usr/bin/tar
# what $(whence tar)
/usr/bin/tar:
tar.c $Date: 2001/08/01 07:30:23 $Revision: r11.11/2 PATCH_11.11 (PHCO_
24716)
$Revision: @(#) all CUP11.11_BL2001_0814_2 PATCH_11.11 PHCO_24716
Tue Aug 14 16:57:24 PDT 2001
it seems that i use tar from /usr/bin
but patch level seems old although i applied patch PHCO_32438.
the following shows that it is applied:
# swlist -l product|grep PHCO_32438
PHCO_32438 1.0 pax(1) cumulative patch
#
what is your conclusion??
best regards
Burhan
