tar tv to specific dir

Dear all,

I would like to extract the tarred archives from a DAT tape to one specific DIR on my HD. I have to avoid replacing the origin directories, therefore I created one DIR where everything should be extracted into from the tape.
What is the command to do so. Reading the man page gives no help to me, therefore I would appreaciate very much to know the command to use. Thanks in advance,

Oliver

Re: tar tv to specific dir

Sorry I made a mistake in the title: I would like to extract the archives on the tape this means I would like to use 'tar xf'. I used 'tar tv' already sucessfully.

Re: tar tv to specific dir

Were the files backed-up on to the tape with an absolute path name, or a relative path name?

absolute

/tmp/foo

relative

tmp/foo

If they were backed up with a relative path name then just cd to DIR and tar xv
