Re: telnet/ftp unable to resolve hostname
Please verify that you can not telnet off the server but can telnet into the server.
When using NIS use :
inetd -c
-or-
inetd -k
... to update.
Verify telnet and ftp are working on the server by invoking a session and displaying the command set with help or ?
ftp
he
telnet
?
Please attach your /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/nsswitch.conf files.

Re: telnet/ftp unable to resolve hostname
I don't think NIS resolves hostnames.
Thats done by DNS, Domain Name Service or /etc/hosts
Quick test.
nslookup
If it doesn't work, follow the steps in the prior posts. If it does, hostname resolution isn't your problem.
If you know the IP address of the two machines, (you can get the HP one with ifconfig, windows ipconfig in a dos box) test connectivity.
ping
If it works you have connectivity, if not you have a network setup issue.
