telnetd -b

HPUX 11.00 64/32

Well after login, telnetd still holds open the banner file. See attached. This is a significant waste of file descriptors with hundreds of users. I haven't searched the patch database yet, so perhaps some of you may know if this is intentional or correctible.

Thanks.

Re: telnetd -b

Jordan,

Same here. On my 11.00 and 11.11 boxes. I didn't see any patches for it.

Dude, don't you have anything better to do than sit around and look at all the open files on your system? ;-)

Re: telnetd -b

Hey John. I do have more important things to do, but I had to research the sudden shortage of descriptors which happened shortly after enabling the banner file. I'd like to use the banner file, but I'll have to wait until I can reconfigure the kernel. Thanks for checking on this.

Hi Jordan,

I was just kidding about you not having anything better to do. I said that because I think that was a excellent catch on your part to notice telnet holding open that file. Zero points please.

Re: telnetd -b

There does indeed appear to be a code bug.
(code is doing an fopen followed by a close,
which should obviously have been an fclose.)
Defect report JAGae45268 has been filed with HP.

I know you were kidding, John, and I do appreciate the extra "fluff" that we all contribute to add character to the forums... A quality lacking in technical manuals not written by Wall, Christiansen, and Orwant.

Re: telnetd -b

Jordan,

I'm glad you saw the humor in my remark. :)

As a side note, I have a friend who worked on the original project back in 1972 for the software that became 'telnet'. I'll have to kid him about you finding a bug in his 30 year old piece of software. ;-)

I would hope that this isn't a 30-year-old flaw! Hey, engineers, let us know how far back this flaw goes. Thanks again John!

This is undoubtedly the best forum entry to date. Thanks to Jordon and John for some good material to start the day. Also, zero points please.

We just upgraded to 11i. Is this open file problem an issue I should be aware of?

Re: telnetd -b

Where are my manners? Hey Doug, thanks for submiting the bug report.

Thomas, I'm not sure about 11i, but do let us know if you find it to be there too.
