Test Unix Box

Wanting to test Unix OS installations on a PC.
Can I install Unix on an Intel based PC, or does the PC have to be a HP PC?

Reading the HP-UX install manual and am unfamiliar with the workstation models they have listed.

My HP box is a rp5405 running HP-UX 11.11.

What workstation model should I look for?

Re: Test Unix Box

HPUX will run on a PA-RISC or 11.23 on Itanium system.

Linux will run on Intel/AMD PC.

If you are wanting 11.x and above, this is 64-bit OS so need hardware to match

Re: Test Unix Box

PC's us a CISC chip. HPUX is designed for PA-RISC chips and/or itanium processors. HPUX will not work on a PC

LINUX however, will run on a PC.

Re: Test Unix Box

rp24xx (formerly known as Series 9000 A-class machines) is the lowest model that you can safely go. They should be cheap enough to buy nowadays.

you can request a quote from these people:

for their used server inventory

Re: Test Unix Box

HP-UX will absolutely NOT run on any PC/Wintel type hardware.

The workstations they reference are almost assuredly the PA-RISC based workstations with model names starting with B, C or J. These are NOT to be confused with PC/Wintel type workstations. The one's they reference will not run Windows, they were designed for Unix.

Monte -
As others have stated, relatively inexpensive HP hardware is out there in great numbers for what you need.
We actually purchased a used box off E-Bay for $200.00 (USA) for our crash and burn machine.
It has paid off well and above the initial cost.

Best of luck.

Re: Test Unix Box

Many have tried, none have succeeded.

There is plenty of good used hardware to practice with. ebay.com

Re: Test Unix Box

If its just UNIX you are looking for and not specifically hpux then you are good with just the PC. You can get (I am probably showing my age here) SCO, Linux, or FreeBSD, and I think sun was even giving a pc version of theirs away at one point.

However if its HP-UX you want to learn, then you will have to go with the hp hardware

Re: Test Unix Box

First time I have opened a thread on this forum. Wow! What a response! Had no idea this site was even here.

Thank you to all who responded.

I need to look for used HP hardware. Think I'll try the web site Mel suggested first. Then maybe try E-bay.
