Often, firewalls are set to limit the size. Otherwise, the file size limitation should be controlled by the receiving server's disk quotas, and/or filesytems' limitations (e.g. unless 'largefiles' is enabled, then <2GB for HP).

Just for the fun of it I have just ftpd a 1.1 Gbyte file - time taken 29.8 seconds on a 100 Meg network.
So No Problems with your file, although I believe that there is a 2 Gig limit but dont quote me.

there might be filesystem limits or perhaps ulimit limits. there might be bugs in the ftp itself, but FTP the protocol should have no limits

2G perhaps for most default filesystem max file sizes although you can change that..

For ftp, there is no limit on size for transfer.
Limitation could be set by either the firewalls or filesystems.
