Re: the tape driver is not defined
You don't mention which version of HP-UX you are running. Assuming you're on 11iv1, follow the instructions here:

Re: the tape driver is not defined
lsdev |grep -i stape
If it is already there,
ioscan -fn
insf -e
This will create the device file.
Regards,
Ravi.

Re: the tape driver is not defined
#lsdev -C tape
Character Block Driver Class
205 -1 stape tape
Should give similar output if the driver is there in kernel otherwise shall be blank.
If the driver not listed you can add the same through either command line or using SAM.
SAM->Kenrel Configuration->Drivers
Select stape and from action menu select add driver to kernel. Followed by this the kernel shall rebuild and the system shall reboot.
If u couldn`t able to find stape then appy the above patches.

Re: the tape driver is not defined
After inserting the stape driver in the kernel ,it will go for rebuilding the kernel and next reboot will make your tape drive active.

Re: the tape driver is not defined
Please take appropriate backups. though doing the above with sam will create vmunix.prev, still suggested is you know how to recover in case of any failures as well....(cautious!)
