I know the NTP server can apply to HP-UX and Linux. If I need to syncronize the time including the Windows 2000 server, how can I do that ? Is it possible ?
From all of your working environment, which server (linux/Unix/others) do you prefer to be the master time server in order to have the best/easiest control ?
Regards,
Patrick

Re: Time server between HP-UX and Windows 2000
Any server could be used as long as is it accurate. Before we started using a router, our server times were all over the place.

Re: Time server between HP-UX and Windows 2000
We use the mainframe SYSPLEX timers as timesource. The mainframes themselves are "stratum 1". Our main routers are "stratum 2". Two Unix Servers and two NT servers are "stratum 3" and serve as timeservers for all the other Unix and NT/Win2K servers (which makes those "stratum 4").
To answer your question, yes, that is possible. We use a service named "Timesync" on the NT/Win2K servers.
Hope this helps,
Tom

Re: Time server between HP-UX and Windows 2000
Sometimes I need to set the HP server's time for our own testing (mainly backward time). No matter how I use the HP server to be the master or client, in what stage should I bring up the TimeServer daemon if I also run MC/SG in two of our servers ?
My server runs HP-UX 11i and MC/SG A.11.13 .

Patrick

Re: Time server between HP-UX and Windows 2000
Do not play with time and clusters ! We did extensively test this (for Y2K) and your cluster is NOT going to like it.
Once a cluster runs, do not (never !) set time backwards. Remember that Serviceguard uses a timecheck to keep the cluster running and to check if the node has the current configuration. If you absolutely must, do your testing on a server where you disable the xntpd-daemon (you definitely don't want time to "jump back/forward") and be prepared to reconfigure your cluster (because crashes are inevitable).

Tom

Re: Time server between HP-UX and Windows 2000
For the normal(production) environment, when should I bring up the Timeserver daemon ? (immediately after boot up the server ? Before bringing up the MC/SG, .... etc)

Re: Time server between HP-UX and Windows 2000
The normal place of xntpd in level 2 is fine. Earlier would have no effect (because you need networkservices), later would not be good (you want the applications to start with the right time).

Tom
