Timezone in SA - JNB

Hi all

I have a query regarding the time in JNB

According to references the time in JNB should be GMT+2 hrs Therefore local time is now 18:40ish

If I have a look on the server

date and date -u

:/ # date
Tue Aug 6 19:09:01 SADT 2002
:/ # date -u
Tue Aug 6 16:09:39 UTC 2002

I have checked this on a server I am working on at the moment and chnaged the timezone as per and it's the same, local time is UTC+3hrs as opposed to 2hrs

The /etc/TIMEZONE file is

TZ=SAST-2SADT
export TZ

Any ideas as per why the universal time is incorrect ?

Thanks in advance

Steve

Re: Timezone in SA - JNB

Well I do know there used to be an issue with SA Time as the US always set TZTAB up with the SAST-2SADT whcih assumes SA uses Daylight Savings time;-}

You need to change the TZ from SAST-2SADT to SAST-2

This has been fixed in 11i by the way

Re: Timezone in SA - JNB

Hi Steve,

Here's one of our servers in Jo'burg (OS=10.20):

jo1p6p-1 # date
Wed Aug 7 09:44:30 SAST 2002
jo1p6p-2 # date -u
Wed Aug 7 07:44:39 UTC 2002
jo1p6p-3 # grep SAST /etc/TI*
/etc/TIMEZONE:TZ=SAST-2

Re: Timezone in SA - JNB

Steve

As mentioned by the others, /etc/TIMEZONE should reflect TZ=SAST-2, but also check your kernel parameters namely the dst setting to "0".

If you ever go to a customer in Namibia however who theoretically are also SAST-2SADT, good luck - give me a call. Their daylight savings time does not conform to any known standard!

Cheers

Re: Timezone in SA - JNB

Carlo
The kernel parameters dst and timezone are not used by the date command. In fact they are only used by some old system calls that are rarely used anymore. The two system calls are gettimeofday(2) and ftime(2).

Re: Timezone in SA - JNB

Hi guys

Thanks for the replies. SA do not use daylight saving

Melvyn. I changed the timezone on an 11i server I am building at the moment and found the setting also to be incorrect
