Two IP Address
Dear Friends,
We have a D220 Server with one inbuilt 10Base T interface configured as lan0.
We have assigned an IP to it (20.74.34.10) with subnet mask 255.255.0.0.
Now we have the requirement to assign a second IP to lan0 with ifalais (172.38.28.2 with subnet 255.255.255.252).
Patch PHNE_12492 and PHNE_19936 has been installed.
It has been observer that the PCs with 20.74 networking fine. ( We are able to ping Server and PCs). Now the PCs with IP 172.38 are able to login to Server but from the Server we are not able to ping the PCs.
It simply hangs w/o any error messages.
What can be the reason?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Two IP Address
Having 2 different IPs on different subnets on the one lancard is fraught with difficulty. I know others who have tried and failed, and given up. Something to do with HP's TCP stack cant handle the routing out and back correctly. Apparently it works on a Sun, but not HP. Get a 2nd lancard.
Im from Palmerston North, New Zealand, but somehow ended up in London...

Re: Two IP Address
How many PC's are we talking about and what addresses?
Your subnet mask of 255.255.255.252 only allows four addresses:_
One network (.0)
Two hosts (.1 and .2)
One broadcast (.3)
If the HP box is one of the hosts, are you only attempting to connect one PC?

Re: Two IP Address
With subnet mask 252 you can have 62 subnets and 2 hosts on each subnet i.e. 0-3 ip addresses 1,2 then 4-7 ip adress 5,6 etcc
So if you are trying to ping ip address in another subnet , is a route defined ,
is ther anything setup as 172 . . 1 and can you ping this .
