unable to connect via Samba fron Win98

Hi all,

I've recently created several Samba accounts, all the W2K users are fine but two users are using Win98 and they can't browse to the unix server. Both these users are at a remote site, I can log in as these users locally on a Win98 PC and I can see the unix server. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Gary.

Re: unable to connect via Samba fron Win98

encrypt password = yes in config file.

What is the error you get samba log file?

Also can you list the win98 shares from hp-ux machine?

smbclient "win98 machine" -L -U "user_id_on_win98"

Also check there are firewall problems in between.

Re: unable to connect via Samba fron Win98

I initially encrypted the password then turned it off, neither worked.

The shared folder is on the Unix server. The remote users can see the server but don't have any access to browse it.

I'll check the Firewall access. Thanks.

Re: unable to connect via Samba fron Win98

According to the user the error is "windows cannot find 'servername'"

Re: unable to connect via Samba fron Win98

I've encountered this problem when the samba share name is too long. The W2k users can access it but the W98 users can't. Try shortening the samba share name.

Re: unable to connect via Samba fron Win98

If they are remote, then they might be on a different network / subnet.
Have you tried setting samba global parameter
remote_announce = [their broadcast address]
