Unix 11 32bit to 64 bit Upgrade

System has been previously upgraded from 10.20 to 11.00 32bit, Now want to upgrade to 64bit mode. Has failed twice, with corrupted filesystem. When swlist is done no O/P showing
HPUXEng32RT B.11.00 English HP-UX 32-bit,also
March 2001 general release patch bundle currently installed, and using Dec 2000 Update CD for upgrade, but using allow_downdate=true option when doing upgrade. Is this causing problem, also how much space do I need for upgrade?

Re: Unix 11 32bit to 64 bit Upgrade

Hello Neil,

Perhaps it's time to look at your problem from a different perspective. Wouldn't it be much easier just to reinstall the OS instead of upgrading? I've seen a lot of problems arising from failed upgrades. Normally, it takes far less time to reinstall.

Re: Unix 11 32bit to 64 bit Upgrade

Hi Neil:

I would urge you to take an Ignite recovery backup and do a cold-install of the 64-bit OS. This best guarantees a clean, error-free result.

Regards!

Re: Unix 11 32bit to 64 bit Upgrade

Whenever we've done this we've always done a clean install and put the data back on...

(This also gives you a chance to clean up a lot of the rubbish you get from old releases etc.)

Neil

Back it up - make_tape_recovery vg00 (ignite)
and then do a clean install of 64 bit.

Far less hassle over and done in about an hour.
Then put you config files back - passwd -hosts- group -etc-etc.

Restore your data and then test.

If you do a search on the forum then the feeling is to do a fresh install rather than an upgrade.

Re: Unix 11 32bit to 64 bit Upgrade

I would also urge that you do a fresh install rather than try to upgrade the system. Doing an upgrade would, you'd have to deal with cleaning up all the 32-bit driver and replacing them with 64-bit once...not to mention all the patches that will probably need to be re-installed (remember most patches have both 32-bit and 64-bit pieces). Rather then try to deal with this mess, it would be much easier to re-install the OS on the machine.

Re: Unix 11 32bit to 64 bit Upgrade

Hi,

Looking at the document detailing the upgrade procedure, i would suggest like everybody else to go for a fresh install.
I have always done it that way and it is worth
the xtra effort , since it is one-time.
