Unusual Omniback Error???

Hello Everyone,

I seem to be getting an unusual warning in one of my Omniback Backups that I run regularly every hour. This particular backup, performs regular hourly backups of Oracle Archiving files. This warning has only been happening for about the last two weeks.

A couple of steps I have taken so far to try and resolve this is:-

1) Had HP replace the entire tape device unit

2) Tried different tapes as I thought maybe it had to do with a bad tape.

The following is the warning message I received:-

[Normal] From: BMA@chapter2 "Chapters 2 DAT/DDS 1" Time: 01/22/01 17:27:46
STARTING Medium Agent "Chapters 2 DAT/DDS 1"

The above warning occurs in every backup but at the same time the backup is still successful so far. Any help or advice on what the above could mean would be greatly appreciated.

The OS is HP-UX 10.20 on a K570 and I am running Omniback 3.10.

Thanks,

S Aldrich

Re: Unusual Omniback Error???

The tape alert messages could be false alarms. If so this can easily be turned off with the following procedure:
edit/create OmniBack_home\omnirc on Windows NT clients, and the
following variable on the media agent client:
OB2TAPEALERT=0
The cause of the tape alerts can be many things. SCSI card problems,
SCSI cable problems, problems with the tape hardware, problems with
firmware. Problems with the NT Box itself.

I'd get a HP CE back on site armed with latest firmware and do a bit more digging .... doesn't sound like a "real" omniback problem if you get my drift.

Re: Unusual Omniback Error???

Shaun, I tend to agree with Alex on this point. I've been looking after omniback for about (almost 2 yrs now) and agree that it is nothing to worry about. Looks like the backup is successful, but it may be worthwhile anyway arming an engineer (just out of curiosity sake). I'm also running 10.20, on a similar K class server.

Re: Unusual Omniback Error???

1. Add the following line into the /opt/omni/.omnirc file on the system to which the tape device is attached:
OB2TAPEALERT=0

Note: If that file does not exist, then copy the file from the
/opt/omni/.omnirc.TMPL template file.

Also make sure you have the latest OBII patches and stape / SCSI patches installed.
