Up and coming Search engines for systems administration

I've seen a trend the last few years in Systems Admnistration. A lot of us turn quickly to search engines to try and quickly solve issues we are not familiar with.

Google is good. So is yahoo. I recall seeing a few years ago an article on up and coming search engines in Time or newsweek.

What this thread is for is to allow us to suggest alternative search engines.

The criteria is that the search engine must be useful and not one of the major, well known old ones.

Yahoo, Google, lycos, alta-vista. I'll arbritraily decide on that. However a subsection of an existing search engine that is useful for systems administration like http://www.google.com/linux qualifies.

I'd like to let this thread open versus my normal policy of closing them. If its very useful maybe I'll suggest it as a front page link.

Point criteria:
2 points for a general purpose seach engine not well known(I decide, its my sand box).
5 points for a good technical systems administration search engine.
0 points for duplicate entires.

If HP wants to adopt this as a front page itrc link than I may request they edit out duplicate or off topic posts. I've not discussed this with HP yet.

There is no solution here, though I reserve the right to vary arbitrarily from the above criteria.

The search engine is an important tool in the toolbelt of a systems admnistrator and I want to add a few.

Onward and upward.

Re: Up and coming Search engines for systems administration

I do not have very specific sites that I know.
I start with google and move onto yahoo and A9.

With google, if you know search tricks, you will usually find what you want. At times even google search on itrc forums gives better results than itrc search itself.

Like follows.

site:forums.itrc.hp.com "SEP OR search engines"

Better google search knowledge, better the results.

Re: Up and coming Search engines for systems administration

I normally stick to Google and the ITRC forums.

If using google, to have just itrc results displayed I do...

site:itrc.hp.com my keyword search

Google is sometimes faster and a bit more accurate plus I can pull up google's cache if the ITRC is slow :)

Re: Up and coming Search engines for systems administration

doh!

I don't mean to clutter SEP's thread w/ duplicate posts... Mine was similar to RAC's, but I use "site:itrc.hp.com" because using "site:forums.itrc.hp.com" cuts down on your search results from google because there are multiple forums sites... ie/ forums1.itrc.hp.com... etc. :)

Just wanted to clear that up.

Re: Up and coming Search engines for systems administration

Does it work for docs.hp.com, software.hp.com ??

I decided the site command was enough like the google.com/linux to qualify. I think people get the idea.

Did I mispell his surname in the title? Then 65 posts and nobody noticed until now?

Hard to believe, but not impossible for one as typing impaired as I.
