Update from 10.20 to 11.11

Hi All
I have a machine model C110,K360 and B2600 machine has 10.20 OS. So i just want to update this machine to 11.11 (by using update-ux). My query as follows

1)It's possible to update from 10.20 to 11.11.
2) If yes how should i do that any steps or doc for this.

Could you please help me in this regards.

Thanks in Advance

Re: Update from 10.20 to 11.11

I wouldn't do this if I were you.

Generally speaking, a fresh install is always more likely to give you a more reliable system but from 10.20 to 11.11 the fresh install approach is much more likely to make you happy.

It is a little more work but is well worth the effort.

Re: Update from 10.20 to 11.11

I've tried both, and would agree with the previous comment. Update-ux does not work, whereas a cold install does.

The following may help:

1. Make a list of lvols on second and subsequent discs.

2. vgexport volume groups on those discs; e.g.
vgexport â v -m /tmp/vg01mapfile /dev/vg01

3. Do at least one ignite backup, preferably two.

4. Do an fbackup in addition to the ignite backup. frecover will recover files that are not on the system without overwriting existing files.

5. mkdir /dev/vg01 and any other volume groups you need.

6. mknod /dev/vg01/group c 64 0x010000 - you may want to check this value before you start. The one I've provided is correct for my system.

7. Load sam. Select Discs and Filesystems -> Volume Groups. Select Actions -> import. Once appropriate VG is displayed, select ok and ignore message about alternative links. VG will now be accessible.

8. mount /dev/vg01/lvol1 /dirname - where dirname is the name of the lvol that was on lvol1 (you should have noted this down earlier). Do the same for any other lvols.

The second and subsequent discs should now be accessible and you can turn to networking. Make sure you've got good backups of /etc, /opt, and /sbin (should be in the ignite and fbackups).

Good luck.

You might like to read http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=268169 where you can read all about the problems I had. Maybe this will help you to avoid them.

Re: Update from 10.20 to 11.11

Actually, I believe I've read that you would have to upgrade to 11.0 first (and this process rarely works well - I know, I tried it), then from 11.0 to 11i (which does work fairly well), so it seems to me it would be easier just to go straight to 11i via a cold install.

Hopefully, your data is all in separate volume groups (other than vg00), so you just build a new vg00 with the 11i install, and then reimport your data, and reinstall any required applications.

Re: Update from 10.20 to 11.11

Hi Mark
This link is quit interesting. But in my case the K class server has single 8Gb harddisk (working as a web / depot server).
So the data part i'll take care. My concern is updating from 10.20 to 11i is possible or do i need to go 10.20 to 11.00 and 11.00 to 11i.

In either case can i have the steps please

Re: Update from 10.20 to 11.11

Prasath,

Sorry, I misled you. Refer to this link for the "11i Installation and Update Guide":

http://www.docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/5187-3614/5187-3614.html

In particular, take a look at "table 1" in the "Migrating from Previous HP-UX Releases" section. It says that you can "Cold-install HP-UX 11i v1 or update".

However, I must again stress that the update process coming from 10.20 was painful at best and usually failed!

As far as specific steps, refer to the above mentioned manual.

I'm with Pete on this one - always go for a cold install.

Re: Update from 10.20 to 11.11

Udpating from 10.20 to 11.0 works just fine and is quite reproducable, but only after you work out all of the bugs, glicthes and gotchas. When I did this a few years back, it took about 2 man months of testing and retesting before we got the procedure correct. My choice would always be a clean install, but unfortunately at the time, a clean install was not a viable option for many reasons (none of which I care to go into here).

Go clean install if at all possible.

Re: Update from 10.20 to 11.11

My take or decision on the update/ cold install is usually predicated on what kind of storage I have attached.

If you have external scsi storage arrays, you will need to update the firmware all the way around - get all your 10.20 patches up to date, Make sure the drive firmware is good, make sure the hardware is supported, etc.

In the case of your workstations, it may not be a problem, but make sure your applications all run under 11.x -

If I was to guess, I would say that your B2600 would be the easiest to do, and I would do that first. I would guess that your K360 may have an old Nike array, and in that case, you would need to get the firmware on the nike updated, as well as the drives in the nike. Then do the vgexport, save off your volume info, etc, and waggle down that road ( I think clean install might be best there)

As far as the C110 - you're on your own

Good luck

Re: Update from 10.20 to 11.11

Hi All
Thanks for ur suggestions. Now i am planning to move 10.20 11.00. For that i have following steps
step1)mount 11.00 CD-ROM
step2)cp /CD-ROM/catalog/SW-GETTOOLS/pfiles/swgettools /var/tmp/
step3)/var/tmp/swgettools -s /CD-ROM
step4)/usr/sbin/swinstall -x match_target=true -x os_name=HP-UX:32 -x os_release=B.11.00 -x autoreboot=true -s /CD-ROM

I just want to know whether its correct. If its wrong can i have the correct steps.

Thanks in Advance

Re: Update from 10.20 to 11.11

If all your machines have a single LAN card that runs 10Mbits only, you should be OK. If you have multiple LAN cards and/or 100Mbit cards, you can expect a *LOT* of LAN complications (licensing, LAN instance numbers, etc) These are some of the most difficult problems to resolve.
