Update root email address on HP UX B.11.23 U ia64 server
There are 2 crons running on our server and the output of those crons are being emailed to the former administrator who left 2 years ago. The email accoutn no longer exists so the emails are being bounced back so i want to update the root email. I checked the crons and there is no mailx command in the crons at all so i can't simply update the crons with the new mail address. I checked the root account SAM to see if the email was recorded there and i can see nothing. I also checked /etc/mail/aliases and the file is empty , so i have no idea where the email of the former adminstrator is being stored. Where can i update the address to a valid mail account???

Re: Update root email address on HP UX B.11.23 U ia64 server
Hi:
Aside from the '/etc/mail/alias' which is "compiled" into '/etc/mail/aliasdb' by running '/usr/sbin/newaliases' --- look for a '.forward' file in root's HOME directory.
Regards!

Re: Update root email address on HP UX B.11.23 U ia64 server
Shalom,
Root's email is generally routed to another mailbox in /etc/aliases
The reason is that often root's home directory is on the root file system. That makes it vulnerable to mail filling up the root file system if used maliciously.
You should set up aliases or virtusertable and generics table and compile a proper sendmail configuration.
See this script for help, as HP-UX varies from the standard a bit.

Basically its as simple as picking a valid account to accept the mail, I recommend without that users home directory being on root and running a single script.
