Upgrade from 10.20 to 11.11 Need help

Hello all,

I am new here and I hope you can help with some questions I have.

I have an HP83000/F330T Tester (Brand new in 1997)and it has a Visualize C3600 Workstation attached to it (I assume it came with the tester). The workstation currently has HP-UX 10.20 and I need to put a scheduled network backup solution in place for it. I have looked into a few things and cant seem to pick the best solution.

One major dilemma I am having is that I want to upgrade this station to 11i v1 which seems to have better support for any kind of modern backup solution (Bacula, Amanda...). The major issue with upgrading is that this 10.20 install has a software bundle on it that runs the tester it is attached to through a Fiber Card. I guess my main question after all the background info is: Can I move the installation of the tester software to the new install of HP-UX or not (no media for reinstalling the software is available)?

Thank you for taking the time to read this. please let me know if there is anything else you would like to know to help answer the question.

Its not adviced to do a upgrade, You should go for a fresh install. About moving your tester software you should be able to do it if you have the depot in the current install.

Re: Upgrade from 10.20 to 11.11 Need help

UVK,

Thank you for the quick response! I read through those posts and I understand what they are saying about Cold-Installing vs. Upgrading.

I guess I can give some more info. I have some extra 36GB hard drives and I took one and did a fresh install of 11.11 and it was smooth and I installed the patches and everything is great! I installed the Bacula client-only from source and everything is smooth. My Bacula server talks to the box and backups and restores work (10.20 would not install the client much less talk to the server; pthread issues among others)! The worst thing is that this software bundle from 1997 is not available and neither the depot nor the source are on the 10.20 original install, only the installed application, I walked into this and I know there is no original media to reinstall the application.

Is there any way I can move the program from the old 10.20 install to the new 11.11 install? I can provide a file with the output from swlist and swlist for the installed app if need be.

Thank you again,
Brian

provided you can locate all the existing executables *and* any non-std libraries they depend on, you might be able to move them manually. if it's codeworded software (licensed), you'll have to find that as well.

see the notes here regarding firmware updates and 3-d graphics support. I don't know if they will be an issue for you or not.

Just out of curiosity... how might I go about locating the depot in the install (if it is even there)

>The worst thing is that this software bundle from 1997 is not available and neither the depot nor the source are on the 10.20 original install, only the installed application

This basically means the application is not supported on 11.11, unless you get a new depot.

>Is there any way I can move the program from the old 10.20 install to the new 11.11 install?

Well you can copy directories but it may not have everything you need.

>how might I go about locating the depot in the install

swlist -a install_source HP83000_F330
But it might just point to your CDROM. :-(

Andy,

I do have a support ticket in with them but haven't gotten a response back yet. Figured I would try a few different approaches.

Dennis,

The Depot is actually still there:

showed me:

Is the depot absolutely not going to work or is it worth a try to see if it will install?

A HUGE THANKS so far to you all for the help. I am still a little new to HP-UX as I am sure you can tell. But I am working on it!

Re: Upgrade from 10.20 to 11.11 Need help

1. just go about and try it, i've actually seen some HP-UX 8.x binaries that only broke when moving to IA64/11.23 - till then they worked just fine.

2. about the upgrading:
usually I too advise against it, but your case sounds like a classical one. I also don't see the fuss about just trying that.
Do an Ignite Image, remove the normal OS disks, recover the image to one of the spare disks, initiate the upgrade; check your app and check bacula. won't take _that_ long either.

Good luck whatever route you pick and nice to see more bacula users :)
yesterday I stood at the edge. Today I'm one step ahead.

Brian,

The bit that worrie me here is the fiber card... is there even a driver for this fiber card in 11.11? You might find you can tsart the tester app on 11.11, but can't tslk to the tester due to driver problems... how does the fiber card appear in an ioscan output on this system??

Wow, you're lucky! Well, that may make it easier to test.
(What was the date on that file?)

It is worth a try. You may have trouble installing it. You may have to use:
-x allow_incompatible=true

Re: Upgrade from 10.20 to 11.11 Need help

Duncan,

Hopefully the drivers are available and I can get it to work. That would obviously be a major deal breaker!

Dennis,

I feel the same way... March 2005

I appreciate very much everyone's help and I will let you know how it goes shortly!

Re: Upgrade from 10.20 to 11.11 Need help

Ok... Duncan's Fear is now my nightmare!

there are two devices on the PCI bus that are unknown, I would say one is the fiber card and the other is a GPIB card

It seems the Depot only has one error and it is with one of these cards.

In 11.11 they show up as unknown PCI devices in .

In 10.20 they show up in

I have attached a text for for both the 10.20 and 11.11 outputs.

I cant figure out where the driver may reside for the card in 10.20 so that I can even look for it. I believe it is a proprietary card from Agilent but not sure... Is there a command that I can run in 10.20 to find out where the PCI drivers were installed from?

Re: Upgrade from 10.20 to 11.11 Need help

An "ioscan -fn" would be better, because it lists the driver too - but IMHO such cards are always very proprietary, this is the reason why many of such workstations still run with 10.20 ...

Hope this helps!

Here is your device:

cid2 0 10/4/1/0 PciCID10eb CLAIMED INTERFACE PCI(10b59080) -- 1
/dev/hp83000/pciCIC.0
sicl 0 10/4/3/0 sicl CLAIMED INTERFACE PCI(10b59050) -- 3

Drivers are "PciCID10eb" and "sicl" (not standard) - when you installed the depot, did you receive errors in swagent log?

Hope this helps!

I knew they were some non-standard, proprietary drivers. I just wonder if I can get an updated version from Agilent or find the install for them somewhere and get them over to 11.11

Yes, I didnt even install the depot because upon analysis it told me there was an error. I can get that output if you would like to see it.

Thank you,

Could be helpful ...

You may ask agilent, but at the time when this system was built everything was hp. Don't know if agilent did continue this ...

Hope this helps!

Re: Upgrade from 10.20 to 11.11 Need help

This is related to EISA cards, but your system doesn't have an EISA slot, hence it can't have an EISA card. But for any reason /hp-ux version check too?) it doesn't install the driver for this card.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Upgrade from 10.20 to 11.11 Need help

Hi,

I know one type of fc hba's that got unsupported (i think tachyon1 or so), they're easy to recognize being 32bit PCI.

Probably you can just replace it by a new one; the other card might prove a big issue though...

Re: Upgrade from 10.20 to 11.11 Need help

Hello all,

Thank you for everyones insight. I have decided to leave the box alone and do another method of backups. I sure wish that I could have gotten this working but due to the proprietary nature of this machine I dont think it will work (Especially since Agilent and Tams both say it wont).

A big THANK YOU again!

Re: Upgrade from 10.20 to 11.11 Need help

well...since this started out as being related to wanting to run bacula / amanda type stuff, since they are open source, you should be able to port them on to 10.20.

of course there's fbackup. an if you've not got it, see if you can grab a copy of ignite that runs on 10.x as well.
