upgrade from 10.20 to 11

I have J5000 that is running HPUX 10.20. I have tried to load HPUX 11 but without success. Type boot ide causes the cdrom to spin and it appears that things are going to work and get all the expected messages and lots of cdrom activity for 5 mins or so, then disk activity stops and nothing happens. It gets as far as
Boot
: disk(..)INSTALL
nnnnnnn + nnnnnnn + nnnnnnn start hexnum

Then sits there for ever.

Re: upgrade from 10.20 to 11

Hi Richard,

It looks that the firmware holds the process. Before you proceed with HP-UX 11i installation, you must upgrade firmware to version 5.0. The firmware is available from ITRC.

Re: upgrade from 10.20 to 11

Whats the date on the HP-UX 11.00 CD? Is it the latest and the most recent?

Have you checked the compatability list and seen that the J5000 will work with 11.00?

Re: upgrade from 10.20 to 11

The easiest way to upgrade firmware is applying OS patch. Assuming you still have HP-UX 10.20 you can apply patch:

PHSS_25981 s700 10.20 B1000/B2000/C3X00/J5X00/J6000/J7000 5.0 FW

The patch is available to download from ITRC.

Re: upgrade from 10.20 to 11

Richard,

It looks like Zygmunt has the right idea...

Looking at the patch documentation for PHSS_25981, I see the following info related to an ancestor patch:

PHSS_19794: HANG OTHER
This patch is critical for B1000, C3000 and J5000
systems so that they can run the 11.00 operating
system. It is also critical because newer memory
modules may not work with firmware versions 1.9
and earlier.

If you don't have at least this ancestor patch installed, you'll be unable to boot an 11.0 system.

Best Regards,

Dave

p.s. It was unclear to me whether you're trying to install 11.0 or 11i, but with the latest firmware, the J5000 should be capable of running either flavor.
