Re: Upgrade HP OS

Don't upgrade! Take a backup (or 2) of the important data on your server, and an Ignite make_tape_recovery (or 2) of the vg00 on your server, and then install HP-UX 11.11 from scratch. An upgrade of 10.20 to an 11.X version of most likely going to fail.

Do a Forums search on "10.20 upgrade" and you will get a LOT of results that should be helpful.

Re: Upgrade HP OS

We tried this upgrade back in 2000 and again in 2001 without any success. Do yourself a favour and do a cold install.

Take at least two backups.
If you have your OS mirrored then you can reduce the mirror and plan to do the cold install on this disk. Don't forget you have the backups as a fallback.
Do a 'vgexport' in preview mode to get your additional volume groups should you have any. There are some other config files in /etc that you'd probably also look at.
Once the install has been done, you can use these 'vgimport' mapfiles to get the additional volume groups.
In all reality this is not a difficult task and with the proper planning should go fine.
Anyone for a Mutiny ?

Re: Upgrade HP OS

Hi,

Upgrading can be quite painful. I would suggest a clean install.

Backup everything first. Take make_tape_recovery of 10.20 OS just in case.

Create mapfiles of any non-vg00 volume group and keep them somewhere safe.

Perform a clean install of OS, apps, and then patch using same disks that 10.20 use.

Put back the mapfiles and vgimport the non-vg00 stuff back in.

Recover any site-specific files - passwd, group, etc.

When its all finished, and successful, take a new make_tape-recovery.

Good luck!

Re: Upgrade HP OS

You will be much, much much better off with a cold install.

Steps other than those above:

1) Check if your hardware is certified.
2) Make sure your hardware is solid, no problems with SCSI problems or hardware.

The failure rate for upgrades is high, over 35% in the lab last time I went to class with a bunch of experienced sysadmins doing 11 to 11.11

10.20 to 11.11 or even 11.00 is that much harder.
