upgrade/reinstall OnlineJFS

Hi all:

Working with HPUX 11.11 on various rp RISC systems. We have recently been informed by HP that the purchased OnlineJFS that came unlocked on the OE DVDs actually has a temporary license and is due to expire on Jun 24 2007.

So now HP is dictating that the OnlineJFS be upgraded.

In the past doing system work with OnlineJFS and the associated patches could cause major problems, and if you got into trouble the only option was to reload the OS and restore from backups.

I would like to stay far away from this!

What would recommended processes, tips, caveats are out there?

IIRC installation of *onlinejfs* is actually just a new license file - all the base jfs binaries have the online capabilities in them just diabled unless the license is installed, so re-installing just the license should be painless as you won't actually be overwriting any patched binaries (I don't think you will find any pacthes which 'update' the onlinejfs filesets)

You are right of course that updating JFS (e.g. 3.3 -> 3.5) did have some gotchas, but that was for JFS *not* onlinejfs.

Of course I haven't had to do this, so I'll defer to anyone with real experience of this situation.

Does not appear to be a "re-installing" of the license as there is new entry in the IPD. Looks as if a new license file is installed.

Yes, quick & painless & minimal impact (if any). I am concerned with the IPD entry because now system audit/validation does not match because of this IPD entry.

What other impact can this new IPD entry cause?

I've done a few OnlineJFS upgrades in my day and it hasn't been problematic other than a few trashed license files on the way. HP always provided good procedures to deal with this.

I don't think its anything awful to be avoided. The patch sets need to be built with dependencies and the reboots if required need to be planned.
