Upgrading 10.20 to 11.0

I have a D370 running 10.20. I need to upgrade to 11.0. I'm fairly new to sys admin and have never done an upgrade. Does anyone know of any documentation that would give me detail steps for upgrading.

take a look at http://www.hp.com/workstations/products/unix/operating/hpux11/cookbook/cookbook.html

advise is less pain if you clean install as opposed to upgrade.

Go read the manual at

This has what you are after.

Re: Upgrading 10.20 to 11.0

Our experience had never been good when attempting an upgrade. Instead, we would just back up our data/apps and then perfom a cold install. From there we would import our volume groups and recover the data. Maybe someone else out there who has had better luck with upgrades can help you down that path if you prefer. Good luck.

Re: Upgrading 10.20 to 11.0

I'm right with Alex. I needed to upgrade some
HPUX servers and had some problems (kernel,
X25 drivers, ...). Now I make a backup of
all data, install HPUX 11 and restore data,
without any problem !

Installation is describe in docs. I think it's
good to make a complete backup of your 10.20
system... (use Ignite for example).

Re: Upgrading 10.20 to 11.0

From previous experience, I can tell you that upgrading 10.20 to 11.00 is much like placing your cactus next to your alarm clock: You can do it, but it's not a good idea.

Do as the others have advised and start with a fresh install of 11.00 then restore what you need and install 11.00 versions of your apps.

Re: Upgrading 10.20 to 11.0

Doug,

As everyone is telling you, do a new install as apposed to an upgrade. Also if disk are available, mirror your vg00 disk to a set of external disk making sure they are bootable. Create maps of your non vg00 disk with your vgexport and keep the maps on your mirror disk (incase you need to bring the system back to 10.20 quickly) and split the mirrors off. generate a make_recovery tape (as a second backup). get copies of the custom files you need on your 10.20 box like:

/root
/home
/etc/profile
/etc/fstab
/etc/passwd
/etc/group
(all maps/config files if your running NIS)
/etc/rc.config.d/netconf
(copies of all your map files)
(copies of all your vgdisplay -v)
(copy of lpstat -v for your printers)
(copy of bdf)
(copy of ioscan's this is important when you start looking for drivers you missed)

there are many more you may need to consider but the idea is that all the files that you modify to get your network connection up again and all your users setup will make the final tweeking so much easier. Finially you will want to make sure you know the upgrade routine for all the applications you are running and if they will work on the new O/S 32 or 64 bit.

In closing if this is your first time and you are not familiar with HP-UX. Make sure you have your vg00 mirrors bootable and split off with copies of your non-vg00 maps so you can quickly get back to where you are starting from. If you have to abbandon the idea, if this is not your first time then you already know to have these things. you can do searches for the syntax on how to do everything i just talked about or you can just ask for the specific syntax again. Good luck!

Re: Upgrading 10.20 to 11.0

there's really good docs describing all the methods and things to look out for at
http://www.hp.com/go/hpux11

You want to have a look at the cokkbook section that'll take you thru the procedure step by step.

Re: Upgrading 10.20 to 11.0

Hi,

The best way to upgrade from 10.20 to 11.00 is cold installation of 11.00 and then restoring customized settings. I like Boley Janowski reply, but I would backup also:

/etc/bootptab
/etc/inittab

Good luck.

Re: Upgrading 10.20 to 11.0

i have tried nearly 10 times to upgrade from 10.2 to 11.0, i never succeeded even once and endup losing data(luckily i had backup). advise you not to try upgrade, cold installation is the better way with backup.
never give up

Re: Upgrading 10.20 to 11.0

I tried to upgrade from 10.20 to 11.00 and it ended up successfully!

Follow the steps in the Installation and Update Guide and be sure your system meets the necessary requirements.

Re: Upgrading 10.20 to 11.0

Hello:

I went through an upgrade, and we had our share of problems, sometimes depending on the client, they wont let you or grant you the time to do a cold install, in which my opion is better.

I can tell you, make sure you make an ignite tape, just in case. Also the books our friends are refering to are good, and make sure you follow the space recomendations. Ours I had to increase and make room, and it was a challenge.

Also, take your time, and plan, ensure you meet the space requirements, and remove the prior patches, that is stated in the upgrading and installation book.

again, if you can, I would do a cold install.

best of luck.

Re: Upgrading 10.20 to 11.0

Doug-

I switched over about four months ago, doing an install like the others said, and it wan't too bad. Look at the other posts people have said, and search the forums as well for other threads that might apply. You will find a lot of tips that others have used or problems they have had to work through. For myself, I would recommend to remember to export your logical volumes so you have it info (I forgot myself). Also, go through everything before (like SAM) and know what you have for hardware and configurations (like NIS, NFS, network settings and speeds, etc) and how the screens look. It will help in setting things back up if it looks familiar. Good luck!

Re: Upgrading 10.20 to 11.0

I agree with the cold install and I have another trick for you if you can get multiple timewindows to perform different steps of the cold install. You don't need mirroring, just some spare unused harddisks that are completely unused in your 10.20 configuration.
When you install HP-UX 11.0 (use ignite !) you can easily configure the disks that you wish to use for the installation. Once your basic installation is finished, you can restart your system normally and it will boot HP-UX 10.20 if you boot from your primary path (in BOOT ADMIN mode). Your system is ready for another couple of days of normal production on the old configuration. You can gather configuration info, write config file to tape (/etc/passwd, ...) reboot your system when you have the time and boot your HP-UX 11.0 disk (in BOOT ADMIN mode, interrupt autoboot and search ipl, then boot from the HP-UX 11.0 device). You can continue to install software en to configure and test your system and applications. Reboot to 10.20 when your time is up. Whatever goes wrong with the HP-UX11 installation, or whatever trouble you get into during the configuration, you can allways go back to your 10.20 configuration. As a last step, export your LVM volumegroups on 10.20, write the exportfile to tape and read it in on HP-UX 11.0 Than import the volumegroup.

This is the procedure that I followed for my upgrade. I needed multiple weekends to figure out all configurations, and during the week, the server operated normally. Very smooth upgrade for me.

Re: Upgrading 10.20 to 11.0

I feel that the online documetation is good. I have seen the good and the bad. Often the failed upgraded are due to the omission of some upgrade steps. Pay particular attention to the 10.20 patch removal section and if installing 64bit OS pay attention to the removal of 32bit drivers; FYI there are some 64bit issues with the Dclass servers...

You may also want to consider moving some of the build files out of the way :

mkdir /tmp/master.d
mkdir /tmp/space.h.d
mkdir /tmp/libs
mv /usr/conf/master.d/* /tmp/master.d
mv /usr/conf/space.h.d/* /tmp/space.h.d
mv /usr/conf/* /tmp/libs
