will help you decide (cold install vs update). Most people would recommend a cold install.

See this check list for upgradation/cold install (10.20 TO 11.x):

Re: Upgrading 10.20 to 11i
Unless you have a 10.20 that is very clean, upgrading to 11.x is unwise, and even with a clean 10.20 system, "upgrading" isn't guaranteed. The horror stories are plenty. If you have a few dozen hours to waste, then you can attempt the "upgrade", but if you want to save yourself a lot of time, do a cold install. A cold install ensures that your system doesn't have any dangling 10.20 gotcha's. You can do a cold install in less than two hours, whereas an "upgrade" could easily cost you a day or two. I have been found that cold installs are better and faster, and this is something I have held on to since the mid 80's.

Re: Upgrading 10.20 to 11i
Definitely go cold-install.
Biggest headache I had was LV size requirements. Most older 10.2 0s don't have large enough / /usr or /var LVs & it's a pain expanding them IF you have enough space left in vg00.

Re: Upgrading 10.20 to 11i
I had done it once on a system where I loaded 10.2 fresh and then upgraded 11.0 (was given the OS soon after the install and didn't know any better) It's a nightmare if your system has actually seen work. I only cold install now.
Good luck,
Kel

Re: Upgrading 10.20 to 11i
This subject comes up periodically and I answer
the question in the same way. If you can do a
cold install. I've tried to do this at least 20
times and always get the same result ... failure.
There a few headaches with this:
firmware
vg00 not being large enough
kernel building during the installation
my 2 cents worth

Re: Upgrading 10.20 to 11i
Totally agree...
It's like the ole west... everyday there's a hangin and a shootin' and in the saloon there's gamblin' even if it's raising ya 4 cents it don't get ya very far!
Cheers
Michael
