Upgrading from 11 to 11i

I know from experience that going from 10.20 to 11 upgrade was easier cold installing version 11.

Is this the case with upgrading 11 to 11i or is this pretty straight.

Could someone please tell me how long on average this upgrade would take and what are the steps required.

Thanks in advance

Re: Upgrading from 11 to 11i

Hi,
there a lots of thread on this:
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=30627
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=304552

For info on how to do the install use the install guide:
www.techsolutions.hp.com/en/5187-2239/5187-2239.pdf or later

I would say cold install in 1 day.

Re: Upgrading from 11 to 11i

Shalom,

Don't.

upgrade-ux is unreliable.

Do a cold installation and then reinstall all your application. Its more work, but its more likely to succeed.

Length of time depends on system speed and number of applications and what their data conversion procedure is.

H,

Go with the fresh installation, it might be a bit more of work at the beggining, but at the end is going to save you a lot of troubles.

Re: Upgrading from 11 to 11i

Actually, the 11 to 11i upgrade is much better than the 10.20 to 11 was. I, myself, would go for a cold install, but, should you choose to upgrade, it is do-able. Make sure all your root file systems are adequately sized before you begin. There should be recommended sizes in the upgrade documentation - go a little large than recommended and you should be fine.

If all else fails and the upgrade process doesn't work for you, then you can do a cold install!!

Re: Upgrading from 11 to 11i

Hi.

The biggest risk you would have is with hardware no longer being supported. I am assuming everything is 64 bit already. I would also just make sure the firmware on your server is a recent version before you even look to upgrading. If I do recall there were some kernel changes we needed to make because some drivers had changed between versions, it was mainly to do with tapes drives. I just removed the offending drivers from the kernel and repeated the upgrade process.

Because of the library changes changed between versions I did find that some apps, Oracle especially, needed to be relinked to run properly.

I would also suggest that you load all the relevant CD's/DVD onto a depot on the server you are upgrading otherwise you could be in for a very long day/night. Add the latest quality pack to that depot too.

Lastly I would recommend that your boot disks are mirrored, split the mirror and use one of those disks as a backup. Also take an ignite backup of vg00 before you even attempt to do your upgrade. It does add a bit of time to the process, but in the end will save you a lot of time\pain if you need to roll back.

Re: Upgrading from 11 to 11i

I did it as a fresh install and the reinstalled the apps. With backups and proper planning it can go quite smoothly. It took me a day or two.

Re: Upgrading from 11 to 11i

If you are running SG then you have no choice but to do a clean install.

You will need to remove the node from the cluster, upgrade and then add it back when done.

Re: Upgrading from 11 to 11i

Hi H,

I would do what Steven said. I would do a cold install and then reinstall the applications. Upgrade usually end up being trouble.

Re: Upgrading from 11 to 11i

Just to confuse things - I have done 11.0 to 11.11 upgrades - and had no trouble at all.

As far as SG - you just have to make sure thet you have a version that is supported on both flavours.
