Upgrading to HP-UX 11i-OE and Mirror-UX

After reading the upgrade procedures for HP-UX11i version1 and developing a plan, I can find no instructions/procedures referring to Mirror-UX considerations.

1 - Does Mirror-UX have to be stopped if changes are being made to the /var, /opt, /tmp and /usr filesystems to expand their sizes?

2 - Are there any upgrade issues concerning an active installation of Mirror-UX/

Re: Upgrading to HP-UX 11i-OE and Mirror-UX

Hi:

(1) No, no change in the mirror state of a logical volume needs to occur when resizing the associated filesystem. All copies will reflect the new filesystem size upon completion.

(2) If you are upgrading releases (e.g. 11.0 to 11.11) then you will need to either license an OE with MirrorDisk/UX already rolled into it or separately license MirrorDisk/UX, obtain and apply the appropriate codeword to the server and 'swinstall' the product from the Application CDROM.

Re: Upgrading to HP-UX 11i-OE and Mirror-UX

Roger,

1 - I certainly hope not - mirroring changes to those file systems is what it's supposed to be doing! ;^)

2 - Typically, people come up with a scheme where they break the mirror, install on the formerly mirrored disk and save the original for fallback. If you just want to lay down a new release of the O/S from install media, I think both question 1 and 2 become moot. Once you start the install off the media, there won't be any mirroring until you re-install the MirrorDisk/UX product. If you're planning on a true upgrade, my first question is: from what release? 10.20 to 11.x upgrades are frought with peril. 11.0 to 11i seems to be more successful if your lvols were adequately sized to begin with.

Re: Upgrading to HP-UX 11i-OE and Mirror-UX

I know of no upgrade issues with mirror/ux

The volumes that are mirrored remain mirrored.

When you expand a logical volume that is already mirrored, you need to have space on two disks equal to the amount you wish to expand the logical volume.

If /usr needs an extra 100 MB, you need 100 MB for the original and another 100 MB for the mirror copy. You may wish to break the mirror, expand the logical volume and then re-mirror, so you can exert control over what disk the mirror copy ends up on.

If you use sam, the system will choose and not always wisely.

Re: Upgrading to HP-UX 11i-OE and Mirror-UX

You are right the doc does not mention Mirror UX.
1. What OS are you updating from?
2. Do you have a make_recovery tape created or planned to be created?

Mirror-UX will not automatically perform mirroring during an ignite process.

The major mirror issue you will have to be concerned about is when you ignite your server. You have to know the HW path of your mirrored disk. Also, during the ignite process you will build our root volume (var, opt, tmp, usr,..etc) on your primary disk.

Once you are satified with the build of your server then you can mirror your new OS against you previous mirrored copy.

You can use your mirrored copy of your "old" OS to recover back to your previous OS level.

Re: Upgrading to HP-UX 11i-OE and Mirror-UX

While I mull over the "extremely quick" responses this got, the upgrade is from HP-UX 11.0 (B.11.00) so it should not have the problems associated with say a 10.20 to 11i upgrade...been there!

If what I'm reading thus far is an indication, you folks are saying the Mirrox-UX (B.3.7.59) currently installed under 11.0 is NOT compatible with 11i...aye???

I agree with the mirror break for the upgrade. Makes perfect sense. Not having the mirror inplace ensures that the lvextends and extendfs's are isolated to the root disk. Space is not an issue as there is sufficient unallocated space to support the extensions on both the primary and mirror disk.

Roger,

I believe that if you currently have a license and codeword for MirrorDisk/UX, all you have to do is get the current application CD set, and ask HP for a new codeword.
