I'm plnning to upgrade vPar software from version A.04.01 to A.04.05. Superdome, HP-UX 11.23 March 2006 release. Although there is a doc "HP-UX Virtual Partitions Administrator's Guide", it doesn't show any info specificly about the releases i'm working with. Also i wwant to upgrade my HP-UX version to a newer one (currently I have June 2008 media kit) and I have read that this is possible with update-ux but there are some points i want to clarify first:
Could I upgrade vPars software directly from the media? or I must create a software depot and upgrade both components at a one time? Any of you heve done this before? Could you provide a brief procedure?
Any help will be appreciated.
Regards!

SolutionThis procedure is documented in the vpar guide, but I think they only document it when updating from release 4.x to 5.x. But it will probably be similar in your situation.
This is just what I think, I didn't do this yet. Check first the release notes, I'm not sure to what extent 4.01 can be mixed with 4.05. You will probably need to update first the primary partition that loads the initial vpmon (the one on which your npar actually boots the first time), then boot the other vpars and update them. Worst case would be a requirement to do all of them at once, in which case you'll need to boot each paritition in npar mode, one at a time, and update it manually, and this will require a lot of downtime.
Good luck, and keep us posted on your results.

Re: Upgrading vPars spftware from A.04.01 to A.04.05
of course you should consult the admin guide
http://docs.hp.com/en/T1335-90098/index.html
the release notes
http://docs.hp.com/en/T1335-90100/index.html
and the config guide
http://docs.hp.com/en//1705/oc.pdf
first. Note: Version A.04.06 is already the latest for 11.23.
But overall the procedure is not a big problem.
1) make sure the server has the latest firmware
2) consider to install the latest patch bundles
3) backup the vpdb file(s)just in case
4) install the latest version of vPars software on each vPar
5) finally reboot the whole system in order to boot the current vpmon
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: Upgrading vPars spftware from A.04.01 to A.04.05
1. I have two HPUX DVD medias and 1 vPar DVD media.
2. I have a file system called /depot
3. Next step in order to get 1 depot of both producte is swcopy each to /depot and then swpackage? (pls clarify as I don't have much experince working with sw depots).
4. Start the update process with update-ux?
Thanks & Regards!

Re: Upgrading vPars spftware from A.04.01 to A.04.05
If you decide to use update-ux or not is up to you. Installing the patches only will patch what you have. Using update-ux will update the entire OE to a current level, including all the drivers and OE related software.
In every case consider to backup before patching/upgrading.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.
