UPS and dumping to Big Brother
Is it possible, either with ups_mond or the various daemons run by UPS Manager II, to pipe that kind of data into Big Brother, the freeware system monitoring package?
The idea is that you'd have Big Brother set up to threshold and thus "go red" against things like output voltage, line voltage (i.e., when it drops to 0) and other parameters normally returned to UPS Manager II's GUI?
Have found a bb-apc_ups-n-env.tar.gz Big Brother extension from http://www.deadcat.net/, however, that's for APC UPS's only (we have HP PowerTrust II's). Have not yet found a way to get at the info UPS Manager II gets, in order to send it off to Big Brother.
Thanks for any hints...

Re: UPS and dumping to Big Brother
Mike,
Does your UPS support SNMP? You make look at feeding BB with SNMP MIBS provided by your manufacturer. We tried this with our UPS, but there where APC's
Good Luck.

Re: UPS and dumping to Big Brother
Hi
I have a very rich expereience in suing big brother for monitoring in HP-UX. One sad answer for your question is www.deadcat.net is still in the proces of developing the MIB modules for your UPS.
Hence if you can get SNMP MIB's from the manufacturer it may be of good use.

Re: UPS and dumping to Big Brother
Thank you Craig and Ramesh.
Craig, you asked what UPS we have. It's an HP PowerTrust II LR. No SNMP/NET card, just the serial cable to the back of the L1000, being monitored by the UPS Manager II software from HP. I think that UPS may indeed support SNMP, as I have found the following snippet via a search of the HP site:
"UPS Manager II uses the industry standard IETF 1628 MIB."
So the bigger question, is how to wire that into Big Brother. I'm hunting down details on how that might be accomplished.
Ramesh, you mentioned that the guys at Deadcat are developing the MIBs for the HP PowerTrust II. That will be good when it arrives - we'll keep our eyes out. Something you said also grabbed my eye - "I have a very rich expereience in suing big brother for monitoring in HP-UX." Can you elaborate on that? It sounds as if there was some form of legal action?
Thanks to both of you,
Mike Mayer
