using N4000 image on rp8400

Can you load a golden image of a N4000 running 11.11 on a rp8400?

Frank

Re: using N4000 image on rp8400

Does the rp8400 have the Itanium CPUs in it? If so, then I seriously doubt it. If it doesn't then it may work.

Re: using N4000 image on rp8400

A good rule of thumb:
If it is not the same hardware type as the server off of which the ignit image was taken, it most likely wont work.

Hope this helps.

Re: using N4000 image on rp8400

Frank,
You will probably have problems with your device files, all the major and minor numbers will have to match exactly. There are just to many things that have to be the same. Simple rule of thumb with ignite is like hardware, like configuration (i.e. scsi id's ...)

I can't say for sure. If the rp8400 is a test machine and not in production yet, then I say give it a shot and see what happens. If it works, cool. If not, well, live and learn.

Re: using N4000 image on rp8400

Ignite golden image are hardware independant for all PA-RISC system. The only concern is the hardware need to be compatible with the OS release. So yes, if your rp8400 (new brand name for the old N4000) has PA-RISC chip, you can do a make_sys_image from your N4000 and then apply it on your rp8400 without any problem (11.00 and 11i).

If your rp8400 has Itanium chip, you need HP-UX 11.20 (11i v1.5). HP-UX 11.11 only run on PA chip not on Itanium.

Sabastien,

So is there a need to make an archive for a K580 and a N4000 for example?

Re: using N4000 image on rp8400

If you want to be able to easily recover ANY of the machines in your environment due to a catastrophic failure of VG00, where you have to restore the entire VG00, then having a make_tape_recovery tape for EACH and EVERY system is very helpful. You just pop the tape in the drive, boot from the tape, and let the system rebuild itself. I do make_tape_recovery's for all of my systems.

But you can build a K580 from and N4000 image. Correct?

Re: using N4000 image on rp8400

I don't know that I'd want to try that. It might work, but with the K series, you've got HP-PB and GSC slots and with the N series you've got PCI slots. There are going to be differences in the kernel between those two machines.

I don't think I'd want to risk trying, and possibly failing, to rebuild a K from a tape created on an N.

I'd just as soon make the separate and have the nice warm fuzzy feeling of knowing that if I need them, they'll work.

Re: using N4000 image on rp8400

Golden Images are great if you have servers with like hardware, but if you create a golden image of an N4000 and then use it to build an RP8400, you could be missing some CRITICAL hardware and potentially software patches, so you will need to make sure you go through the patch process.

Re: using N4000 image on rp8400

You can build an image from any hardware to be put on any hardware. By any, you need to follow some rule.

Install all possible driver package on your current system if you want to be included in the Ignite image.

Also install the last Hardware Enable patch and Quality Patch bundle so your image will supporte any new/old hardware.

For me, I build an image from my K220 and I install it without any problem on a N4000.

Re: using N4000 image on rp8400

Hi Frank,

Another thing to remember if trying to build a K from an N's ignite image: 32 bit vs 64 bit.

And as others have said, just building from the ignite image will not be good enough. You will probably need some drivers and patches for hardware that is different.
