UX printer configuration

Hi everybody!

I have to add a new printer to the printers I already have. I have the /etc/lp/interface/xxx file (it's ok) but I don't know how to make visible the new printer to the printer system.

The os is HP-UX 11.i

I think sam is the most user-friendly way of adding a printer.

Is it a network printer or direct-connected? This may have a bearing. Also, if it is a QMS printer there is a piece of software specifically for those.

Come back with more details if sam does not do everything you need.

Hi,

The command line option to add a printer is addqueue command. check man addqueue. If you have the interfase file i would move it first to pintername_save use the add_queue command and move the interface file back.

and you could configure a new network printer.

Here's how to do it from the command line:

addqueue -i 9998 -q -h

Example:

addqueue -i 9998 -q W052 -h w052.mydomain.net

The -i option is the "printID type from the following list:

-h is the host name, and -q is the queue name.

Most printers are added with 9998 "Generic". Some may have to be 9992 (Genicom).

Emanuele, they are documents.
Go in technical knowledge base from ITRC home page and insert A5194845 by specifying 'search by Doc.ID'. You should get a document from ITRC database. Anyway have you a support contract with HP? It is needed to see documents in technical knowledge base.

Otherwise what does addqueue command obtain as Geoff suggested you?

Before using the HPPI commands like addqueue, are you adding an HP printer with an HP network card? If not, the JetDirect software that is part oh HP Printer Installer won't work and you must add the printer as a 'remote' printer. The same thing is true for adding a printer that is on another server.

If this is an HP printer *and* the HP JetDirect network interface card already has already been setup with an IP address, subnet mask and gateway, then you can use addqueue. addqueue will test to see if the printer is indeed an HP printer with an HP interface. The command is:

/opt/hpnpl/bin/addqueue -h 12.34.56.78 -q queuename

where 12.34.56.78 is the IP address of the printer and queuename is whatever you want to call the printer when using the lp command.

Note: if you have been editing or copying files in /etc/lp/interface, you may have problems with lp subsystem. There are several related indexes like the pstatus file that must be kept in sync.

I tried this command

But it respond:

Printer not supported.

Then...I tried SAM!
I'm able to add the printer p076 with queue p076. I can configure it but I'm not able to assign to the printer the correct model script.

Exactly: I see the model script within the model script list but when I make the new printer it uses the generic_model_script.
I'm triyng to assign the net_ljx000 model script to the new printer.

What is the printer model? Is it an HP LaserJet? HP DeskJets come in several incompatible models (they require MS Windows and cannot work on any other platform). If this is a relatively new HP LaserJet, your HPPI software is probably too old to know about the printer. You can use addqueue -l to list all the printers that are known by this version of addqueue. If this is an HP LaserJet, you can override the automatic check for printer type with the -i option.

Thanks to everyone...now the printer is working.

I did it with SAM.
Even with the default script model everything seems to be all right.

The printer is a laserjet 2300dn model and it seems not to be supported by hppi

In any case...I wonder how to install it from command line...

You need to upgrade your HPPI software. It is supplied through a different part of HP (printers) so it is not kept up to date with HP-UX install CDs. The LaserJet 2300DN is VERY new so that's why it is not recognized. Download the latest HPPI version from www.hp.com. As mentioned, you can install the printer using addqueue. You MUST use the -i option to force selection of the model script. Use the command like this:

/opt/hpnpl/bin/addqueue -i 257 -h 12.3.56.78 -q print_queue
