Veritas Netbackup client?

Hi all,

I've just installed Veritas Netbackup client software on a HPUX 11 system, which will be managed from an NT system (not my choice!). Having never touched Netbackup before I was wondering if anyone here could tell me if there are any things to watch out for.

The configuration on the NT server specifies that ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES should be backed up. On the HP system I have a file /usr/openv/netbackup/exclude_list that contains a list of directories that I do not want backed up (such as /var/adm/crash and the Oracle datafile directories).

Anything else I should be doing? Does anyone have any other words of wisdom regarding NetBackup?

Thanks,
Steve

Re: Veritas Netbackup client?

Hi,
What version of Netbackup are you running ?
Version 3.2 has several tips and tricks -
most of them on Media Servers, not clients -
and you might experience timeouts from time
to time (depending on how heavily your
NT Media Server is used).
Version 3.4 seems to (only in test on our
site) be more "stable" ...

A very important file is the
/opt/openv/netbackup/bp.conf file (which might be under /usr on your system :-) .
On a client it should look like this :
SERVER = [media server]
CLIENT_READ_TIMEOUT = 3600
CLIENT_CONNECT_TIMEOUT = 3600
CLIENT_NAME = [client]

P.S. The support database on the Veritas
website is VERY good (use "advanced
search"). There's a lot of undocumented
features / options to be found there.

Re: Veritas Netbackup client?

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the response. We're running version 3.4 of Netbackup. The bp.conf file only contains the CLIENT and SERVER parameters - there are no timeouts so I assume its using the default of 300 seconds (according to the manual). We're running a backup now and it seems to be going ok so I'll leave things as they are for the time being.

Cheers,
Steve

Re: Veritas Netbackup client?

Hi Steven,
I would be gratefull if you would/could keep me posted on further "experiences" with Veritas Netbackup. We use it mainly for backuping oracle databases (from 6 Media Servers and twice as many clients) and any info about backuping servers would be very welcome.

It goes without saying that you can always directly ask any questions you might have ...
I'll gladly make the time to look into them.

Thanks in advance,
Tom Geudens
