Visualize C180 hanging in boot of HP-UX 11

I have an HP C180 that is hanging after printing the following:

Memory Information:
physical page size = 4096 bytes, logical page

It hangs right there, in the middle of the line. Sometimes printing out
more or less. I did just build a new kernel (tuned for Oracle 9i per the
release notes, which I just installed). I had booted that kernel several
times before I started having these problems.

I have tried the previous kernel (hpux -is /stand/vmunix.prev) which also
failed.

Booting from the install cd worked, and I could get to a shell. I tried the
Recovery option from the menu and that ran to completion, but it still
won't boot from the hard disk.

I'm pretty new to HP-UX (just installed it a few days ago) but I've been impressed so far. I'm hoping to find a solution other than to reinstalling the whole OS.

Thanks in advance,
Dave

Since it is hanging in the memory section and you cannot boot the old kernel, maybe there are hardware memory issues?

I have not seen this particular problem, it could be time to call in your HP engineer to look at the hardware.

Have you tried removing/swapping any RAM?

In the BCH, turn off "FastBoot" if it is enabled. If the memory tests do not pass, then this could explain the problem.

A memory problem makes the most sense to me too. It seems like it's too early for anything else, but it does boot off of the recovery cd, so that's a bit of a mystery.

The first thing I did was disable fastboot, but it doesn't output any errors or warnings.

I have three banks of 128 each, and I tried each pair successively in 0a/b, with the same result each time.

It is possible this is some sort of heat problem? As I was switching the simms around I noticed they were quite hot. I don't have an HP comparision, but if anything in my PC or Sparc was that hot after the time it took me to get the case off I'd be worried.

Alas, I got this machine second hand for the sheer joy of playing with hp-ux and lack a support contract. It would probably cost far more than the machine, so I'm not sure I want to go down that road if I don't absolutely have to.
