My question is, I can't remember if I need to update the cmclconfig.ascii file and run the check/apply routine? And can the cluster be active to do this? (MCSG 11.14)
It's been a while since I added a VG, can anyone help?

Re: Volume Group added to Cluster
The only entry for the VG in the ASCII file is for the cluster aware VGs. You can live without it if you like, but it makes things a little better since MC/SG knows which VGs should be cluster aware. You can add a volume group with the cluster running. Take a look at this link:

Solution1) cmgetconf -c mycluster > myconf.ascii
2) edit the file myconf.ascii and add your VG
3) Run cmcheckconf against the updated file
4) Run cmapplyconf
Man cmgetconf, cmcheckconf, cmapplyconf for details.

Re: Volume Group added to Cluster
Yes you can do cmcheckconf and cmapplyconf while the cluster is active .
