VPars query

Hi.

We are looking to use vpars in an upcomming project. However my previous experiance of the vpar software an operation was that to remove CPU and memory in use in 1 partion to allocate to another necessitated a reset/reboot of the partion to release the resources. Is this still the case?

I.e if I want to move 3 CPUS and 1024Mb of ram from vpar A to vpar B then vpar A needs a reboot o release the resources.

thanks.

Re: VPars query

Hi,

it was never really necessary to reboot to remove a CPU.
With the newest version you can add memory online, but you still need to shutdown if you want to remove memory.

Hope this helps!

Re: VPars query

It likely will require a shutdown to remove the resources now (since it doesn't sound like the memory in vPar A was configured to be Ejectable) -- but I think it is worth pointing out that with the latest version you can configure memory Ejectable and move it between vPars dynamically as well (11.31 only, obviously -- but 11.23 doesn't do memory addition on-line either). [i.e. you don't always need to shutdown with the latest version...]

Re: VPars query

Sorry - I should have pointed out. These servers will initialy be at HP-UX 11.11 on PA -RISC.

So just to clarify, I can remove CPU form a vpar dynamicaly but NOT memory?

thanks.

Re: VPars query

Well, you don't state your vPars version -- but I would expect that the answer is yes. (v3 of vPars has the "Bound vs. Unbound CPU" concept such that some cpus would be unmovable, v4 and later has Boot vs. Dynamic (Boot can't be moved, the rest can)).
