vsifax on ia64 11.23 error: cannot get host address for ...

i am trying to run any vsifax command on my server i get this error:

"vfxstat: Cannot login: Cannot get host address for opi-hpux"

i talked to esker and they said they don't why get that message and then when they found out i have an ia64 they said they do not support vsifax on a 64-bit unix os.

when i check the vgsched log i noticed this:
Build info = HP-UX hp0 B.10.20 A
System = HP-UX:B.11.23:U:ia64

does this mean my version is compiled on hpux 10.20 risc?

i tried reintalling and playing with the vsifax.ini and host file but allways the same error message.

vsifax version 6.0.0 build 437

thanks,
amir

Re: vsifax on ia64 11.23 error: cannot get host address for ...

That would be my guess, yes.

I just checked one of my server that runs VSIFAX and it has the same "Build info" in the vgsched file.

As far as them not supporting Vsifax on a 64-bit OS, that is crazy.

I've been running Vsifax on the 64-bit version of HP-UX 11.11 for several years without any issues.

It may be that they don't support VSIFAX on an Itanium box. I would question them about the SPECIFIC HP-UX versions they support and on what hardware platforms.

patrick, esker just called me again and said they have another customer with the same problem that called them today, but she has hpux 11.11 risc

the support lady will email me a link today with a different build for me to try and i will post my results after i install it.

also i am sending them a link to this forum since they are interested to see how this issue gets resolved.

Are you sure VSIFAX is running? I get a similar error when the Vsifax scheduler is not running.

What happens if you do a:

# vfxsched start

Hi Amir

I believe I am the other customer that had a similar issue yesterday (08/13/08) and was also told, after several unsuccessful attempts to figure it out the issue, that 64bit was not actually supported. Apparently, it never has been. Vsifax has worked fine for nearly 4 years on this server and yesterday just hung up for no known reason. I finally had to reboot the server and that seems to have helped because it's working again now. Sorry I couldn't be more help to you. I actually found your post when I was searching for any information about the whole "64bit has never been supported" surprise. My Esker sales rep verified that the support person was correct, no support for HP-UX 64bit.

>>no support for HP-UX 64bit

How in the world do they expect to run on any HP-UX server sold since about 2000? All servers from that time forward have been 64-bit only for HP-UX.

Either the Esker support people are lazy and don't want to actually troubleshoot anything and are using the "not support" line as their excuse -- OR Esker is woefully behind the times for OS support.

I would escalate this Esker support management and get something in writing from them about EXACTLY which OS's, including 32 or 64 bit, are or are not supported.

Re: vsifax on ia64 11.23 error: cannot get host address for ...

this is funny...

i decided to install the vsifax on our client's server (we tried on our test server and by now you know it didn't work) and well it worked just fine on our client's server. which is all that matters anyway.

i think this is a server to server issue. i don't know why it doesn't work on our server, maybe i need some os patches.

anyways just wanted to update you guys.

thanks,
amir

Re: vsifax on ia64 11.23 error: cannot get host address for ...

This issue was thoroughly researched by our Research and Development team in April and they found out that the issue is actually with HP-UX, not VSIFAX. Please see the link below regarding this issue,

http://www.graysoft.com/support/tm/tm115.html

Once the function GetHosyByName issue was resolved on HP-UX, VSIFAX worked just fine.

Also note, that VSIFAX works on HP-UX because its' 64 bit processor is able to interpret 32 bit code. So, VSIFAX should work fine and if you should run into issues, please know that our Technical Support Team will do it's best to assist you in resolving those issues.

Re: vsifax on ia64 11.23 error: cannot get host address for ...

Shalom,

getbyhostname issues are almost always a result of faulty host name resolution

/etc/nsswitch.conf
/etc/resolv.conf (one or more servers not working).

Stuff like that.

To "Esker Technical Support":

Then it sounds as if you need to educate your support line employees. The issue mentioned in that note has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with a 64-bit OS. If that truly was the problem, then blaming on the 64-bit OS is utterly ridiculous!
