vxfs sparse files

Guys, we have a problem with sparse files.
When our DBAs allocate new tmp file in oracle it is created as a sparse, so only minimum space is allocated. The bad thing here is that we easily face FS full problem, which is hard to be resolved (we need downtime to fix this).
Can we disable this "feature" because it creates a lot of problem but no benefit at all!

No, is not possible to disable the creation of sparse files in the vxfs filesystem nor the LVM structure.

Have a look at this thread for more info.

Re: vxfs sparse files

This is more an Oracle question than HPUX.
As such, you are more likely to find solutions or more defintie positions in Oracle forums or support structure.

Specifically, you may want to check out Metalink article 744744.1 and it's links.

The suggested workaround there is not really different from the other topic:
- copy temp file
- create ... tablespace .. reuse;

For me, the value of reading this (Tom Kyte) article in Metalink is a more serious indication that there is nothing much else you can do.

btw... one of the reference articles is actually from 1993!
