vxfsd - JFS FS daemon

Could anybody tell me about vxfsd. It takes
4% of my CPU, according to "top":

TTY PID USERNAME PRI NI SIZE RES STATE TIME %WCPU %CPU COMMAND
? 28 root 152 20 0K 0K run 52:23 4.29 4.29 vxfsd
pts/tb 23936 stan 168 20 424K 308K run 0:00 0.18 0.18 top
? 3 root 128 20 0K 0K sleep 102:39 0.06 0.06 statdaemon
.......

What that mean? Is it so
much? Is there a need to do anything to decrease this usage.

Re: vxfsd - JFS FS daemon

As far as I can tell this usage is normal. You haven't said what your hardware is, but in a L2000 server with 4 440 MHz processors and 8 GB of RAM, vxfsd takes 1.25% of the total CPU time on the server.

Also, if you take a look into JournalFS product, you'll see that there is no such thing as a file called "vxfsd". So vxfsd is a daemon process, and so you wouldn't be able to change its priority anyway.

HTH and don't forget to assign the corresponding points.

Re: vxfsd - JFS FS daemon

I'm speculating here, but I believe vxfsd is the daemon for the journalled file system and I would assume that it is logging (or journalling) changes to the file system so that they can be recovered in case of a crash. CPU utilization of 4% sounds a bit high to me but I'm unaware of anyway to tune it so I expect you just have to accept it as necessary. You certainly don't want to try to get rid of it!
