Re: VXVM Upgrade procedure for HP UX
Hi,
Please find the attached.
Storage Foundation 4.1 ├в 5.0 upgrade procedure The purpose of this document is to highlight, on a server running HP-UX 11.23, the steps required to upgrade Storage Foundation 4.1 to Storage Foundation 5.0. The server was initially loaded with Storage Foundation for Oracle 4.1, though no Oracle database or processes were configured or in use on this test system at the time the upgrade was performed. For this reason, when the upgrade was performed the SF-ORA 5.0 option was selected during the upgrade procedure. Procedurally, the steps outlined within this document are the same as if an upgrade of the standard SF packages were taking place.
Reference documentation:

Veritas Installation Assessment Service
The Veritas Installation Assessment Service is an online service that can be used to verify that servers in your environment meet the requirements for installing new installations as well as upgrades, to the SFHA 5.0 family of products. As a part of the upgrade procedure in this document VAIS was used to check the test server to insure that it met all the prerequisites. The VAIS is accessible at http://vias.symantec.com/main.php. Supported HP-UX operating systems Veritas Storage Foundation and Veritas Storage Foundation for Oracle can only be installed on a system running the September 2004 HP-UX 11i version 2.0 release or later on the PA-RISC or Itanium platforms. To verify the operating system version use the swlist command as follows: # swlist | grep HPUXBaseAuxHPUXBaseAux B.11.23.0409 HP-UX

Storage Foundation and High Availability Solutions 5.0 The following information is required to setup the permission for Veritas Storage Foundation for Oracle Utility to support Oracle Database: The Veritas Storage Foundation for Oracle utility for database administration requires permission changes to allow database administrators (DBAs) access to the tools. The default settings at installation time for the /opt/VRTSdbed directory allows only the root user access to the directory. You need to change permissions to allow a DBA or a group of DBAs access to the Veritas Storage Foundation for Oracle tools Do you want to add single user access on cishp3 [y,n,q,?] (y) n Do you want to add group access on cishp3 [y,n,q,?] (y) n You chose 'no' to set permission for Oracle DBA access to /opt/VRTSdbed directory on cishp3. You must manually set permission of the directory to 750, owner to Oracle DBA user, and group to Oracle DBA group in order to run Veritas Storage Foundation for Oracle utilities. Press [Return] to continue: The Volume Manager appears to have already been installed on the system cishp3. You will be prevented from performing post-installation activities, such as setting up the enclosure-based naming scheme and default disk group on this host. Press [Return] to continue: The enclosure-based naming scheme is a feature of Veritas Volume Manager. It allows one to reference disks using a symbolic name that is more meaningful than the operating system's normal device access name. This symbolic name is typically derived from the array name. None of the target systems can be reconfigured to use the enclosure-based naming scheme now. After the installation is complete, you may use the vxdiskadm(1M) command to reconfigure this naming scheme. Press [Return] to continue: Storage Foundation and High Availability Solutions 5.0 Veritas Volume Manager default disk group name configuration: Many Veritas Volume Manager commands affect the contents or configuration of a disk group. Such commands require that the user specify a disk group. This is accomplished by using the -g option of a command or setting the VXVM_DEFAULTDG environment variable. An alternative to these two methods for some commands is to configure the name of the default disk group of a system. Note: The default disk group feature is not available with the DCLI vxadm(1M) and vxquery(1M) commands. When using these commands, a required disk group must be explicitly identified using the -g option. None of the target systems(s) can be configured because VxVM is already installed. Use the vxdctl(1M) command to configure the default disk group after the installation is completed.

Re: VXVM Upgrade procedure for HP UX
Shalom,
Full backup of all data. Cold. Shut down databases and such and take a backup.
Ignite backup us useful, however once the file systems are upgraded the old OS image will not be able to mount the file systems.
So steps:
1) Ignite backup of Os.
2) Install the upgrade/boot.
3) Back up data file systems
4) Follow file system upgrade procedures after you know the system is stable.

Re: VXVM Upgrade procedure for HP UX
Maurice, how did your upgrade go sir?
I am thinking I think it maybe good to do the following -- IF I was doing it:
Of course shut down apps/dbs, etc.
Deport ALL your VxVM 4.1 Diskgroups
De-Install VxVM 4.1.
Reboot
Install VxVM 5/ VxFS 5 (or CVM/CFS 5.0)
Import VxVM 4.1 Diskgroups
Upgrade Diskgroup Versions of the Diskgroups
Update Filesystem Version of the Filesystems on the volumes of those diskgroups
Mount Filesystems as appropriate.
