What a Day?

I come early thinking will go home early because it is friday. At around 8:00 all of our cluseters and HP system lost their power. Few was up because they was on differnt PDU. But we have to shut that down as well because we have lost AC. We thougt it was something in power line turn out to be bad circket board in one of the PDU and it was tripping many more PDU's again and again.

Now it is 2:00 and we are trying to bring all system up, God knows when we will be done.

More interesting that I am going on-call from tonight.
God help me out!!!!

Re: What a Day?

I'm actually having a pretty good day after winning the AIX adventure game.

No hardware manuals and no training on brand new p-series servers has proved to be a glorious poke and hope chore.

Finally found the right combination to find and boot from the OS CD. Why, oh WHY does this have to be so hard as opposed to HP?

Loading maint patches was a breeze after someone took pity on me and handed me an old AIX manual they had.

Some things are easier, but most things are much harder than HPUX.

Had to search the web for nmon as not even top comes with the OS.

Re: What a Day?

Well, at least my Friday is not the only bad one ;)

I was tasked on Wedensday to get 6 servers ready for delivery on Monday. I had the OS done, and about 1/2 the apps done yesterday. I thought "great, I'll have some time tomorrow and not have to rush".

I got a call at 7:30 this morning saying we need to deliver 4 of the servers by noon today, the last 2 on Monday.

Well, thanks to good typing skills and alot of CPIO they were out the door at 11:45 (still have to configure some apps, but binaries all loaded). The other 2 are now a bit behind.

Oh well, I wanted to work yet another Saturday anyway didnt I? hehe

Re: What a Day?

Since my two server racks are next to each other, and both racks have their own UPS' built in, I did the following.

I had holes cut in the cabinets and have one third of our rp5450/L2000 servers drawing power off the other rack's PDU.

When some nice person in our facilties department unplugged the PDU nothing happened except some messages on the GSP card.

Its not always possible to do this. It just happens that the L boxes have three plugs. I'm not sure how long a box is going to like running on a third of its power, but obviously once I know a PDU is dead, I can do some further plug re-routing to keep the servers up.

Cheer up, its Friday, your on call period will draw to a close.
