Re: What do you do for a hobby, when not IT.

My longest lasting activity is playing drums in a Rock band. Still doing it after 31 years. Did it professionally for about 5 years then decided that I liked eating reguarly.

In no particular order:
Ham radio

Private Pilot, singe engine land.

Auto mechanics, out of need at first now as a hobby.

Competitive Trap, pistol and rifle shooting. Gunsmithing/refinishing.

Golf.

Wood working, build furniture.

R/C airplanes, cars and boats.

Looking for fun in all the wrong places.

Next - of course - to my wife and kids, who do not allow me to put pics of them on the web, but who cares :) my hobby is Perl. Do computer languages count as computers?

Aside from that, when the weather is fine, I'd like to hike with my girl (the right one on the pic) or to create things from wood (tables and such).

Enjoy, have FUN! H.Merijn

Hi,

I play the bassguitar for about 25 years. The last couple of years I do that in a gospelchurch.

Besides that a lot of times goes to my wife and kids (2 doughters, third will be 'deployed' in december)

When there is time left, I like to sport. At first running, then bike and swim. Did some half marathons, run-bike-runs and 1/4-triathlon.

I negociated 3 11:30-14:30 (prolongated lunch time, out of standard hours) to bring down my extra hours I spend at work, the hierarchy has the choice of cancelling one of them for a good reason once in a week episodicaly...
It leaves me the time to cross the town to play some organ...
The rest of time is spent now with my 2 kids
Here is my daughter on me in the "before to Bed ritual"

All the best

So Steven - apparently your hobby is raising dandelions? Quite a crop you've got there.

;^)

Oh - and the kids are cute, too. I won't go into what hobby they came from.

Re: What do you do for a hobby, when not IT.

When not working on my beloved HP9000's I tend to like playing with those microsofty computerish type things although I do have two "D" class HP9000's at home for light relief (does that count as computers ?) Otherwise its walking the dog with the family along the river bank and watching DVD's !!

Prior to the birth of my daughter (whos luvly)5 years ago I did have a bit of a life playing guitar and harp in a blues/rock band but those days are past never to return sob sob - History buffs can see details of my sad little life (with some pics , mp3 and wmv video) somewhere in here -

Re: What do you do for a hobby, when not IT.

This is a wonderful thread. I love seeing everyone's family. You all got beautiful kids. As soon as I get home, I'll post a picture of my two hobbies. But when I don't take care of my children (please read, when my wife has had enough of me yelling at them, she takes them away *hehe*), I love to do jigsaw puzzles. Since the kids, I found it harder to keep all the pieces in the same room, but I still make them. *LOL*

Re: What do you do for a hobby, when not IT.

My auto high school shop teacher once professed to not having enough time for all of his hobbies and interests and I'm afraid that this is where I've grown into. I don't have all the time in the day with kids growing up and needing to learn how to swing the bat or read and write or just learn to use the potty.

But I also need challenges and have stayed with one hobby or another long enough to get what I want out of it and then move on to another. Often times never being able to come back to it. For example, I use to sail, once belonged to a sailing club and got good enough to give sailing lessons and did on the San Francisco Bay for a couple of years. But I'll never go back to sailing because of all the maintenance needed to keep up the boat and because your neck, shoulders and back tire from holding the tiller for long periods of time while steering. I can't hold the tiller any more.

For several years I've been trying to recreate an old English dinner with prime rib and Yorkshire pudding et al., have succeeded with these two but can't get the cream spinach down. Not enough bacon fat, I think.

I've always done a lot of automotive and house work, my Dad insisted, and since the good weather's back I'll have to move on and start in on some house projects. Kitchen cabinets are up next.

Reading is another example of not being able to find the time in the day. The exception to this might be the 'Wheel of Time' series of SCI FI books which has kept me going for about a decade now. Until the author's last book that is. Which was a huge disappointment?

rockets and computers

here is a pic of me and a rocket

I also build PC's and overclock them at least 15%.

The most recent one is an AMD 2400 OC's to 2700.

The AMD 2700 runs 2.1 times faster than a Pentium 2.4, which really amazed me.

It is always a good day when you are launching rockets! http://tripolioklahoma.org, Mostly Missiles http://mostlymissiles.com

When not playing with civilian computers, I am out every second weekend playing soldier-boy with the Territorial Army as a Signals Technician.

The next weekend is survival training so I am re-reading Bravo Two Zero and practising my lines,...

"I'm sorry I cannot answer that question!"
