What do you do for a hobby, when not IT.

Michael, No, nobody has seen fit to publish my stuff. Thinking about self publishing on the web.

Alright, as everybody shows pictures.
This is a picture of my wife (far left), my sister in law with daughter and her husband.
The one in blue is me, and of course our beloved dog.

When not standing in front of a camera I like my pond with, yep the koi.

Good thread !!

Steven,

Here's something that we at HP Bangalore did once - went on a trek.

Here's me (in the center) and team mates on both sides. That's the HP Bangalore office (or one of the bldgs) in the background.

Was good fun - the trek.

Re: What do you do for a hobby, when not IT.

-no points for this please-

SEP - I've written one piece of science fiction.. (back in high school) and had it published. I doubt you'll find it anywhere becuase it was by a local theater (playhouse) for a contest. I won second place and a whopping $75 dollars (oh boy!)

My favorite sci-fi show now is Farscape... but much to my dismay they cancelled the show. Oh well... I still have the DVD's :)

I also want to briefly say I've never been to a convention before... I thought the people that went to those type of things were a bit fanatical (no offense to anyone that goes to cons...) but I went to the Farscape con in NY 9/9/01 (a few days before 9-11 and I had a blast. Yes there were some fanatical people... but it was so much fun.... I got to meet Ben Browder and Clauda Black.... both were very cool.

Paula,

Life in the bleeps is quiet at the moment; no budget left for training plus everyone is keeping quiet lest they get posted to OP TELIC (we have 2 guys and 2 girls out there at the moment).

How is the REME fairing, with firefighting duties plus homeland defence? Are you putting in a bid for an Afghanistan posting?

An extra point to Mr. Dennison for defending freedom.

John,

I have a web hosting customer that is essentially self publishing his science fiction. Two full books on his site thus far, he keeps warning me that number three is ALMOST done.

If its something want people to read, you should consider that route.

I'm not going to post a link here, but you can hit my private email for further discussion.

Thanks for all your wonderful input.

I'll keep updating the thread if you keep posting folks.

Its nice to see the non-technical side of our lives.

Peace.

My hobbies are raising monkeys (the three pictured in the attachment), trying to keep my wife straight (is actually more like her keeping me straight), supporting the girls soccer endeavors, playing guitar and writing poetry. Oh...and during the summer trying to survive South Carolina humidity!

Great thread, I am very fortunate to be surrounded by the outstanding people that reside in this forum!

Re: What do you do for a hobby, when not IT.

Shalom Steven,
nice idea :-)

Why do you think anyone of "us" would have a hobby beside *the* forums?

But since you asked, not ordered or sorted in any way:
- snowboard (especially what we called "soulsurfing" in the past)
- reading (sci-fi, fantasy, scientific stuff, fun stuff, comics)
- going to the movies (soon: Matrix Reloaded, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen)
- traveling around the globe
- eating exotic/foreign food (I love the indian food, especially the west-benghal sweets)
- listing to music (rock&roll, pop, classic, folk, traditionals)
- games (dice, cards, role playing games, yo-yos, no LARP yet, nothing on computers)
- meeting friends
- not been active for some time: taekwon-do, fencing, trap shooting, fishing

My girlfriend wouldn't like to be called a "hobby", so I won't do that...

The picture is a yo-yo "Henry's Viper", quite a useable one (people got used to see a 39 year old boy walking around, doing yo-yo tricks - after a time)

I also have motobikes: an old Triumph bonneville and a swiss army condor A350
I have to enter hard negotiation to clear off for a ride...

Just saw Matrix Reloaded and it looks like another Oscar. This time for the head on with the semi's. Also thought the story line was outstanding which is unusual for a movie this day and age. Very well written. (* I thought. *) Now I can't wait for III.

I have debated whether its worth getting the DVD and seeing if the DVD drive on my one year old Dell actually works and then going to see the movie.

I take it thats two thumbs up from Michael.

A whole bunch of sport and I'm really addicted to mountainbiking. Riding on a bike in the mountains (of course offroad) and enjoying the great surroundings, what more do you want? The pain in the muscles you get for free.

The attached picture is at the end of a 130 kilometer mountainbike competition in Bouillon (the Ardennen in Belgium). More fun can be found at http://www.zoenk.be , the website of our mtb club (dutch only, sorry).

Definately a passion of mine to get out of the bit-race is scuba diving. Nothing like getting rid of your stress hanging at 40 metres on Nitrox amongst 80 or so ragged tooth sharks!

Re: What do you do for a hobby, when not IT.

Who is it that thinks that any of us would have a hobby outside of IT or the forums? When would we have time?? {Latest example is the little P133 that just got turned into a router/firewall over a 2-WEEK period (yah, I know I???m slow but it didn???t go smoothly!)}.

OK, I do have some interests outside of IT, but nowhere NEAR enough time to do many of them:

I have always loved motorcycles (motorbikes for our European friends), but my 1981 Honda Goldwing has been sitting with a blown electrical system for over a year now ;-( That used to be one of those things I would make time for, now I don???t have the time or money to restore it.

I have a wife and a 5-year-old daughter that both keep me rather busy. The wife does it with yard work and other ???honey do???s???. She never seems to run out of them :-\ My daughter does it with her constant desire for attention and her twice-weekly Taekwon Do classes (she is already a yellow belt and is most likely going to test for her next one at the end of this month [woo-hoo!]). She also made me promise that she would only take classes if I took some too. Problem is that I can???t get my feet that high anymore, so I opted for Ho Shin Do instead (also yellow belt if anybody is interested).

Would love to do more reading again. I used to be caught up with every Steven King book on the market (don???t know how far behind I am now???). I also loved the sci-fi and the occasional fantasy. Anne Rice isn???t a bad author either (IMHUO). Guess you could say that I liked most everything but dry tech manuals and love stories???

Would like to get back out and fish sometimes. Used to do a large amount of tube fishing once upon a time. Talk about your stress relievers???

There are a lot of other things that I have interests in and probably just as many more that I used to do and would like to do again, but unless I get off my butt and create a machine that can extend the free time in a day, then I guess I???ll just have to keep plugging on for now???

This photo is an older one of the GL1000 (motorcycle mentioned above) with a much younger version of my daughter and myself included.

The next one will be a more recent picture of the same young lady just before getting promoted to her yellow belt.

Nice idea SEP. Kind of a ???get re-acquainted??? for the veterans and a brief look at some of the new talent. Wish I would have thought of it ;-P
