What does it mean?

i have this error in syslog:
vmunix: SCSI: Read error -- dev: b 31 0x050000, errno: 12
6, resid: 2048,
vmunix: blkno: 8, sectno: 16, offset: 8192, bcount: 2048

What it means and is it critical?

Thank you.

Re: What does it mean?

Olga,

It may be an initial sign of a failing disk. Keep watching if if it happens again at the same place.

blkno: 8, sectno: 16, offset: 8192

If so, plan to migrate data and replace the disk.

Re: What does it mean?

Do you have any timeout set on your lvols which have a filesystem? check using lvdisplay and if you have the timeout you may want to unset it. good luck,

Giri.

Re: What does it mean?

It seems that there are some problems in your SCSI Disk Drive. Try to replace the disk as soon as possible.

Re: What does it mean?

Hi Olga,

That hex number can be decoded to tell you which drive

First 2 past the x 05 => c5
Next digit 0 => t0
Next digit 0 => d0

So it's c5t0d0 that's kicked the error.
If it's a one-time error - no problem.
Keeps occurring - time to replace the disk.

Jeff

Re: What does it mean?

In addition ..
It's still worthwhile to run diagnostics on c5t0d0 just to make sure (even if you only see one or two SCSI read error).
# ioscan -fnC disk
==> take note of the disk hrw path
# cstm
cstm> map
cstm> sel dev
cstm> exc

The exerciser will be run, once it is completed (check with "map" command in cstm to see it's status), run ..

cstm> eal
cstm> einf
cstm> efl

.. to determine if there is any error at all.

Re: What does it mean?

Hi Olga,

Looks like a disk problem to me. The device in question seems to be c5t0d0. If this is a disk, plan for a replacement.

Hope this helps.

Re: What does it mean?

As an addition, check this document which explains the same error (TKB #LVMKBRC00007578):
