What is the difference between 11.0 and 11i [aka 11.11]?

The topic says it all. The machines I have (rp2470's) came with 11.0, but I received these machines in 2003. Shouldn't 11.11 have been shipped with them instead of 11.0?

More to the point however, what is the difference between 11.0 and 11i? For some reason my searches aren't giving me the information I need. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks,
Daryl

Re: What is the difference between 11.0 and 11i [aka 11.11]?

I would start here:

http://docs.hp.com/hpux/os/11i/index.html

with the Release Notes and "READ Before Installing or UPdateing" documents.

11i (i=Internet) adds new features and installs more stuff automagically when the OS is installed. It also now comes in different Operating Environments (OEs). Different OEs have different products that get installed by default. So instead of buying a bunch of separate products and needing codewords to install them, you now get them bundled and they install when the OS gets installed.

More info on 11i here:
http://www.hp.com/products1/unix/operating/index.html

Info on the OEs available:
http://www.hp.com/products1/unix/operating/choice/index.html

Also, HP-UX 11.11 will be supported much longer than 11.0. 11.0 is scheduled to be desupported on Dec. 31, 2006.

As to your machines -- 1) Did you get them brand new from HP or a reseller? 2) How did you order them? HP should have put 11i on, but some resellers will do any version you want and 11.0 may have been their default.

For new machines like these, reload them with 11.11. 11.0 was first shipped in 1997 which makes it very old in computer years. 11.0 will be obsolete fairly soon, then unsupported so don't bother with 11.0. The release notes will gve you most of the details.

As far as I know both 11.0 and 11.11 (11i) are supported. But I would follow Pharao Bills advise on putting 11i on it.

In general most programs that run on 11.0 will run on 11i. Another issue is of course having the appication version that is supported. As for differences I would reccomend reading the Release Notes.

http://www.software.hp.com/RELEASES-MEDIA/

The major difference between 11i and 11.0 is the Operating Environment. The HP-UX 11i operating environments are designed to
fill a range of business needs, from large network file systems to high-end computing environments. This means applications can
be developed on an entry-level HP 9000 Enterprise Server or workstation, then put into production on a data center-class
system with virtually no changes.

The operating environments allow simpler installation by minimizing the number of CDs, codewords and system reboots that
would be required if all the products in an operating environment bundle were installed as separate products.

Documentation site located at: http://www.docs.hp.com .

HP-UX 11.0 Operating System: 11.0 releases of the HP-UX operating system.

or

HP-UX 11i Operating Environments: 11i Operating Environments.
http://docs.hp.com/hpux/os/11i/index.html

As far as applications go - there are some differences - for example, if moving Oracle from 11.0 to 11.i, you have to re-link the Oracle binaries (talk to your DBA)...

Re: What is the difference between 11.0 and 11i [aka 11.11]?

Hi Daryl,

other ITRC people already directed you to the right way. Anyway when you said

11i [aka 11.11] take attention for this because it is not exact:

hp-UX 11i Version 1.0 = B.11.11

hp-UX 11i Version 1.5 = B.11.20

hp-UX 11i Version 1.6 = B.11.22

hp-UX 11i Version 2 = B.11.23

Therefore 11.11 is the first version of HP-UX 11i; also B.11.11 (for now) is the last version of HP-UX released by HP for PA-RISC.

Thank you everyone for your replies! Many good places to start here.

Patrick, we got them brand new from HP. I wasn't involved with the ordering process & this is my first time working with HPUX so I didn't know that 11.0 wasn't the latest version [well, until recently].

Thanks again for your help!

Re: What is the difference between 11.0 and 11i [aka 11.11]?

Daryl,

I would guess the reason you got 11.0 on them is because they were ordered that way. I recently got a C3750 workstation that came pre-loaded with 11.0 on it. I couldn't understand why until I went back over the detailed specs of the order and lo and behold, that's exactly what it was spec'd for. I promptly reloaded it with 11i.

Re: What is the difference between 11.0 and 11i [aka 11.11]?

Pete is right, there are different part numbers for 11.0 versus 11i. As of the end of March, HP stopped selling 11.0. If you purchased software support with your system, you would be entitled to 11i (11.11), so if that is the case, then contact HP or use the web to request the updated CDs.
